BEHAVIOURAL TRAINING & EMPLOYEES RETENTION

-By Ramesh Sangare, President & CEO, HRD Corp. & HRDC Global Placements

???????????????????????Lot many things have been churned out during whole of the last century, by the experts in management science, industrial psychology, day to day operational management, promoters of enterprises on the needs of employee’s engagement and employee’s retention, in the positive and productive manner. Organizations employ the people for certain tasks and results related to the organizational goals and objectives, based upon their knowledge, skills, physical fitness, IQ, now EIQ, attitude etc. Yet, often the organizations suffer from the dissatisfaction and discomfort when it comes final results in the hand. Pareto Principles say that 20% employees deliver 80% productivity, which in other words means 80% are not doing enough, as expected, in spite of the fact they have technical qualifications with proper technical knowledge, and technical skills. What does it mean? It means that technical expertise is only the tip of the iceberg, which is considered as the mainly the salient feature of the employees, even today, by most of the organizations. All the other personality related factors are either taken lightly and / or sadly neglected while retaining the so-called talents. In fact, the truth is that the employee is not employed in parts but as a whole, with his or her expectations, hopes, dreams, aspirations, fears and phobias which are the emotional factors. And the emotional factors rule all the actions and reactions of human beings, resulting into either good or bad performance.

More often than not, I come across the situation, in which the management people are worried about rising attrition (especially as seen in this post-pandemic period) and the challenges of retaining real good productive employees for a reasonably long time. In the fast-changing world of your work, with rapid obsolescence of technology, the global constraints of energy crises arising out of international economic-political crises due to ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and skirmishes in Middle-East, and constant Chinese threats to its neighbors and resultant unabated inflation, internal socio-economic-political situations, smooth running of the organizations has become real challenge, which largely depends upon the HR which can be game-changers! In spite of all these challenges India seems to be doing OK compared to many other not only in Asia but also in the West, which perennially dominated industrial world in the past. Yes, HR could be the game-changer, provided the organizations look beyond the only usual technical expertise and care for managing their minds with Emotional IQ, through the process of constant empowerment aimed at bringing them emotionally closer to the organization and deflecting them from the outside job opportunities and attractions.

The companies in our country are yet to fully understand and accept the fact that there is larger and urgent need to invest on the Learning and Development of employees at large, as most of the large industrial houses in India hardly spend even 1% of their annual turnover on the Empowerment process of Attitudinal and Behavioral shaping up of their employees in the strategic manner, through behavioral training programs. Those which are serious on this front are gaining the high speed in raising productivity with industrial peace, through very high employee engagement and employee retention, with sustainable results.

Fernando Cortez of Texas AM University found out the relation of employe retentions and the training of Soft-Skills Development. The following 10 Soft Skills have been found to be effective in creating highly positive ambience in the operations at all the levels in the industrial and corporate world, as per his findings-

1.?????Communication

2.?????Courtesy

3.?????Flexibility & Changeability

4.?????Integrity

5.?????Interpersonal Skills

6.?????Positive Attitude

7.?????Professionalism

8.?????Responsibility

9.?????Teamwork

10.?Work ethic

The employee empowerment process through Behavioral Training and Development activities should be the Mission of companies, as the capacity of HR is unlimited. Napoleon Hill wrote in his book “Law od Success”, nearly 100 years back the that, “Our limitations are those which we setup in our minds.”

Way back, in 1918 Charles Riborg Mann of Carnegie Foundation wrote through his research that Interpersonal Skills contribute 85%?and technical skills contribute 15% to the on-the-job success of an employees, which holds true even today.

We, from HRD Corp. have been contributing to the entire Manufacturing and Service Sectors substantially, significantly and most effectively through our highly customized Behavioral Training programs for the last 32 years, as we have been witnessing the challenges, changes and transformations in industrial-economic scenario globally and locally, as the HR Empowerment Consultants, by assisting organizations, whether small or big, in their attempts to keep their employees highly motivated, updated and activated to deliver the Best, with the high emotional attachment with the organizations.
