Reflections on the Webinar - Challenges and myths about English as a Lingua Franca

Hey, folks.

I’ve watched a webinar ?with the great Priscila Bordon, MA where she shares her knowledge on English as a Lingua Franca.

Here are some highlights I’ve made:

  • when it comes to ELF, the context is more important than the sound itself. She gave the example of “think”, “sing” or “fink”. We can say that, most of the times,? we are able to infer the meaning by its communicative situation
  • ELF is a way of using English. you include you identity, your sense of self, ideias and ideologies about the world (love that!)
  • ELF aims for inclusion instead of changing one thing for the other - English in a global communication scenario
  • Key words:? inteligibility, accomodation?
  • To sum up, the main takeaway I took from this enlightening talk is that ELF is more about perspective than imposition or exclusion.? By exposing the students to different possibilites they can feel more empowered to own their own English.

Feel free to share your thoughts on that :)

Thank you, Priscila Bordon, MA
