Reflections on a Water Positive Future
My passion for water started long before my time at P&G – it’s in my genes. My father, Jacques Oudin, was a member of the Senate of France where he developed and passed the Oudin-Santini law in 2005. That legislation allowed local authorities, trade unions and water agencies to devote up to 1% of their water and sanitation budgets to aid international projects that help restore and protect water. This international financing approach established a framework for decentralized cooperation in water and sanitation, establishing a model to encourage adoption by other countries to unlock new flows of financing and inspire collective action for water and sanitation.??
His legacy inspires me every day.
Eighteen years since his effort, millions of people are still living without access to safe water. This stark reality illustrates the need for all of us — individuals, communities and companies — to take collective action to protect this precious resource.???
That’s why P&G is working to help build a water positive future that can sustain people and nature, now and for generations to come. P&G’s Water Positive Future strategy guides us in restoring water in 18 water-stressed areas around the world for people and nature, responding to water challenges through innovation and partnerships, and reducing water in our operations. This comprehensive effort will provide solutions to protect ecosystems, replenish groundwater supplies, reduce the amount of water diverted from essential bodies of water, and improve water quality for the community and the wildlife that depends on them.

We are also advancing solutions to make everyday living more sustainable as founding members of the 50L Home Coalition , a global collaborative of public, private and non-governmental organization leaders whose goal is to reinvent the future of urban water use. Through the Coalition, P&G is developing innovations that reduce, reuse or eliminate water to help create a resilient, low-carbon water future where 50 liters of daily water use per person feels like 500 – the average per capita daily household water use in some parts of the world.??
I am currently in New York City, attending the UN 2023 Water Conference with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development to champion water innovation and action around the world, where we’ll announce new commitments for the 50 Liter Home Coalition. I’ll also share our approaches, past successes and emerging opportunities to accelerate innovation and policy transformation through public-private collaboration.???
I’m proud of the progress we’ve made to date, and I’m looking forward to our continued journey toward making a water positive future a reality.
