Today, I was awakened by a call from my wife. Initially, I thought she was calling to share how tough her night shift had been, as she usually does, and I was mentally preparing to console her. But to my surprise, she sounded full of energy—nothing like someone who had just worked a 12-hour night shift. Instead, she simply wanted to wish me a happy birthday and say a few sweet things. Lol.
Like many people who grew up where I did, birthdays have never really been a big deal. Since it was too early to fall back asleep, I stayed in bed, wide awake, reflecting on life. Over the past three decades, life has taught me many lessons, and I thought I’d share a few that have shaped my journey so far;
- The best moment of your life will never be in front of a computer Technology might help us communicate, but it’s not where the deepest human connections occur. The real magic happens when we step away from the screen and live in the moment.
- People Will Talk – Let Them No matter what you do, people will always have opinions. It’s easy to get caught up in worrying about what others think, but you must understand that their opinions don’t define you. Focus on your goals and values, and let people talk. Their words reflect more about them than about you.
- When you are tired – Don’t quit – Rest Life can get overwhelming, and it’s normal to feel exhausted, but quitting shouldn’t be your first option. Take time to rest, recharge, and regain perspective. Often, rest is the cure for the fatigue that clouds your judgment, and once you’re rejuvenated, you’ll find the strength to continue.
- Don’t be greedy Greed can lead to destruction—whether in relationships, business, or personal fulfillment. Being content with what you have and sharing with others fosters lasting happiness and builds stronger, more meaningful relationships. True wealth lies not in accumulating possessions, but in living a balanced life of generosity and moderation.
- Be humble Humility is a virtue that brings wisdom and growth. It opens the door to learning from others and keeps you grounded. When you remain humble, you appreciate the help, insights, and contributions of those around you, making you a better person and a more effective leader.
- Life is fragile Life is unpredictable, and its fragility often catches us by surprise. One moment, everything seems stable; the next, everything changes drastically. We must treasure each moment, hold our loved ones close, and live each day with intention because nothing is guaranteed.
- Be grateful for what you have Gratitude is a powerful force that shifts our perspective from what’s missing to what’s present. When we focus on what we have—our health, relationships, opportunities—we find contentment. Gratitude opens our eyes to the abundance in our lives and keeps us from constantly chasing after more.
- Life goes on
This is a fundamental truth about life: whether you're present or not, life will go on. So stay humble and avoid overestimating your importance, because even if you leave today, those who remain will continue moving forward.
As I reflect on these lessons today, I am filled with deep gratitude for life’s journey and the opportunity to celebrate another year. Just like the famous Catholic song, I say, 'Mwabombeni Mayo wandi Pankufyala'—Indeed, 'Nakula,' I have grown.
