Reflections on The Tao of iflix for a better 2016

Over the festive period our CEO Azran and our Thailand and Philippines Country Managers Kimmy and Sherwin put their heads together to give the rest of us at iflix some tips on how to incorporate ideas on productivity in to our unique work culture and philosophy – The Tao of iflix. The results were AWESOME and we want to share them with everyone for an amazing, fun and super productive 2016!

Notes on productivity from Azran, Kimmy and Sherwin:

As we take the long weekend to reflect on the amazing year that has gone by - the many unbelievable accomplishments achieved, scary hurdles overcome, and great friendships formed - and psych ourselves up for the coming new year, Kimmy, Sherwin and I compiled a list of reminders for ourselves.

We wanted to use our 5 iflix Values to guide us on how we can keep improving and have more fun.

We thought we’d share this with you. Do remind us when you see us falling back on some these pointers.

Be Simple

Keep Focused: Be clear on the NUMBER ONE priority that we are working on for the day/week/month.

Tackle it earlier in the day.

Ensure that we keep the list of things we're focusing on tight - with a list of not more than 5 key priorities that take up to 80% of our time and effort - and ensure that they are aligned with the 6 buckets of iflix Key Priorities;

1. Exceptional Content,
2. World Class Product,
3. Personalised Marketing,
4. Scale Distribution,
5. Market Expansion,
6. Great Governance

Avoid continuously trying to multi-task during the day. Tackle one task at a time.

Avoid checking emails throughout the day. Batch process 2-4 specific times throughout the day. If its urgent, talk to the person involved.

Be Clear: When communicating, we’re going to try to be clear on what we’re saying or writing. What is the ‘so what’ of our message? Re-read emails before sending.

Be a consistent minimalist. Ask ourselves: "What is the most impact I can achieve today for the least amount of effort'?

Be Brave

At iflix, we have our Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) - to be the leading television entertainment service in emerging markets, serving 50 million customers in 30-50 countries. In the short-term, we're going after 10 million video viewing minutes per day.

Set our personal BHAG that really pushes us out of our comfort zone.

Is there a relationship that's draining us emotionally? Confront it constructively.

Lead an initiative. There are many opportunities at iflix. You just need to put up your hand and voice out.

Be Real

Feedback: Ask someone in iflix that we work with, to exchange feedback. Give and receive both positive and constructive feedback to keep on learning and improving.

Point out when we’re stuck: Participate actively during Daily-Stand-ups. Daily stand-ups are useful if we use our 1-minute to update the status of what we're going to do on our 1-3 top priorities, but also to specifically point out where we're currently stuck…If we're never stuck, then we're not trying hard enough.

Practice daily gratitude and celebrate small victories every day.

Be Curious

Learn a new skill. Reach out to those that we see around us who are good at something we've always wanted to try out.

Have lunch with someone new at the office.

Read up best practices in other businesses/start-ups. Follow industry and functional news daily (what’s happening in the tech/start-up world? What’s happening in the content industry? What’s the latest technology trends, what are the best digital marketers doing?) Think how to adapt to iflix.

Talk to consumers (this could be our family & friends). "Hey, have you heard of iflix?", "What do you like/ don't like about it?" "How do we get you to watch more?"

Be Playful

Plan a holiday together. Make use of your vacation time!

Volunteer to host a Friday afternoon drinks/games session. Get creative!

Dress up, dress down - step out of your comfort zone! Organize dressed themes.

Enjoy the outdoors! Sometimes pop to the cafe downstairs with your laptop and get work done with a change in scenery.

Get up and dance!
