Reflections on a stimulating day at the event "Powering Tomorrow, Inspiring Today:

Over 2?? 0?? 0?? energy professionals and decision-makers gathered yesterday to delve deeper into the central role of nuclear energy in shaping the #EU's sustainable future.

Keynote presentations by Maro? ?ef?ovi?, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission and Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market as well as debates by experts and industry leaders from the sector, highlighted the urgency of adopting a systematic and permanent evidence-based agnostic energy policy.

Maro? ?ef?ovi? pointed out that "In our monumental task of combating climate change, we must use all available tools. #Nuclear energy has a central role to play as it contributes both to achieving our goals of carbon #neutrality, strategic #autonomy, #competitiveness and #resilience. "

Thierry Breton announced that he wants a new European initiative on nuclear technologies, a "Nuclear Technologies #Act".

On the first round table, EDF CEO Luc Rémont, added: "#Electricity only accounts for a third of Europe's energy consumption. Reducing carbon dependency for the remaining two-thirds is our main challenge.

To meet this challenge, "electricity, which operates as a system, needs public and private investment to stimulate innovation and deploy mature technologies on a large scale in order to meet the growing demand for decarbonised energy."

Fortum CEO, Markus Rauramo advocated for a holistic approach to electricity, asserting that a robust power system, ensuring both resilience and security of supply, requires dispatchable carbon-free energy sources like nuclear and hydropower alongside variable renewables.

The discussions therefore highlighted the need to establish a level playing field for all zero-emission technologies, in particular by ensuring fair access to EU #funds and #financing opportunities.

Finally, the event shed light on the growing demand within the industry for qualified #professionals and the various initiatives in place, as well as those yet to be developed, for the #younger generation in the nuclear sector.

Several young workers from the sector shared their enthusiasm for working in the nuclear industry and asked the panelists about European initiatives to facilitate skills #mobility, stimulate #innovation and step up #communication on nuclear energy.

Vattenfall Senior Executive Vice President Generation, Torbj?rn Wahlborg insisted that we need to be more vocal about what it is to work in the nuclear sector. “We have the lowest CO2 footprint among all energy sources, very few people know about that”.

Many thanks to all the participants, speakers and co-organisers for facilitating such an enriching dialogue. Our special thanks go to EDF Fortum Vattenfall Euractiv Maro? ?ef?ovi?
