Reflections at the Start of 2020: from the Race

Yesterday, I ran my first marathon race of the year: I started in the early morning Florida darkness, ran more as the sun rose above the shimmering water, and felt throughout the run the strong, cool sea breezes in my face. The run provided plenty of time to clear my mind and reflect on the four things that I am committed to doing in 2020:

1. Staying positive – I am reminded often that attitude is everything. Henry Ford said, “Whether we think we can or think we can’t; you’re right.” Just as challenging as running into the wind is, success for 2020 requires us to make every effort to have a positive, optimistic attitude.
2. Maintaining focus – As I think about returning to work to start a new year, many different thoughts come to mind. Success in business as well as running occurs when we concentrate on a few simple goals and focus on doing them well. Putting one foot in front of the other and breathing is a simple formula for finishing a marathon, and I need to commit to be vigilant about maintaining that focus.
3. Practicing gratitude – Running, for me, is one of my greatest pleasures. It allows me to explore, step outside myself, and see beautiful places. Finishing a hard race also humbles me and reminds me to be grateful for all I have. 
4. Concentrating on Team –  To some people running may be an individual sport, but for me, running is all about team. It is about the people: family, friends, colleagues, and network, that provide support. My team extends well beyond those joining me at the race. As I think about 2020, success will come when we all come together as a Team.
