Reflections on Serving and Defending Justice

To The Young Legal Minds...Reflections on 20 Years

After two decades of practicing law in the great state of Georgia, I find myself reflecting on the journey that has shaped me into the attorney and businesswoman I am today. As a Black female attorney, the road has been both challenging and rewarding, filled with lessons that I hope to share with the next generation of aspiring legal minds.

The Foundation: Early Lessons and Mentorship

My passion for the law began to take root while I was still in high school. I quickly realized the importance of not only understanding the law but also finding mentors who could guide me through the nuances of the legal field. These early relationships proved invaluable, offering me insights that textbooks alone could never provide.

Staying connected to these mentors throughout my career has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey. Their wisdom and encouragement have been a steady anchor, especially during challenging times. If there is one piece of advice I would give to young people considering a legal career, it is this: seek out mentors early, listen intently, and maintain those relationships as you grow.

The Highs and Lows of the Courtroom

Practicing law is a profession filled with emotional highs and lows. Winning a case and delivering justice for a client can feel exhilarating, reaffirming the hard work and dedication invested in each matter. On the flip side, losing a case can be a humbling experience, forcing you to analyze what went wrong and find ways to improve.

These moments taught me resilience and the importance of preparation. Every case is an opportunity to learn, and even setbacks can become stepping stones toward greater understanding and mastery of the law. Beyond practicing law, I have also served as the Administrator of the Law in employment cases, applying the evidence to the law and ensuring that the law was applied fairly. Over the years, I have worn many hats—prosecutor, defense attorney, investigator, and judge—all of which have shaped my understanding and application of justice.

Navigating Challenges as a Young Prosecutor

Starting my career as a prosecutor was an eye-opening experience. It was not just about enforcing the law; it was about understanding people. The individuals charged with crimes often had complex stories and circumstances that required compassion and fairness, alongside a commitment to justice. Learning how to communicate effectively with defendants, victims, and their families was a skill that took time to develop but has served me well throughout my career.

Another challenge was earning the respect of seasoned attorneys, many of whom doubted my abilities simply because of my age, gender, or race. These interactions, while difficult, taught me how to stand my ground and respond with grace and intelligence. Each encounter became an opportunity to demonstrate my capability and commitment to the law.

From Prosecutor to Businesswoman: Building My Law Practice

In 2011, I took a leap of faith and opened my own firm. Transitioning from working within a structured organization to running a business which was both thrilling and daunting. I had to learn quickly how to manage not only legal cases but also the operational aspects of a business, from hiring staff to balancing budgets.

Over the years, I have grown not only as an attorney but also as a leader. My firm represents a culmination of hard work, strategic thinking, and the support of a dedicated team. It stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and vision.

Lessons Learned and Looking Forward

As I look back on these 20 years, I am proud of what I have accomplished but also humbled by the journey. The law is a dynamic and ever-evolving field, and the lessons it offers are endless. I remain committed to learning, growing, and mentoring others, just as my mentors did for me.

To those who aspire to follow a similar path, I say this: embrace the highs and the lows, remain steadfast in your values, and never underestimate the power of mentorship and preparation. The journey will not be easy, but it will be worth it.
