Reflections on a Remarkable Life: Lessons from Former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa

Yesterday, August 19th, 2024, we laid to rest Ms. Maureen Mwanawasa, Zambia’s former First Lady. While many knew her as the wife of Zambia’s third President, Levy Mwanawasa, who served from 2002 until his passing in 2008, I was fortunate to see beyond her public role. Through our encounters—whether in the company of others or in one-on-one conversations—I discovered the depth of her character and drew invaluable lessons from her life. Here are three that resonate most strongly with me:

  • Integrity in All Circumstances: Being married to a man renowned as a "crusader against corruption," Ms. Mwanawasa exemplified integrity in all aspects of her life. She consistently spoke of others with kindness and respect, regardless of the situation, embodying the strength of her partnership with President Mwanawasa.
  • More Than a Symbolic Role: Ms. Mwanawasa was a force of action and ideas. As the past president of the Organisation of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS and the founder of the Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative (MMCI) in 2002, she was deeply committed to uplifting women and the underprivileged. Her work was particularly impactful in a country where youth and female employment remain significant challenges.

  • Championing the Youth: In 2018, during a dinner at the Mwanawasa residence in Zambia, I experienced her deep interest in the youth firsthand. Rather than focusing on the upcoming memorial for her late husband, she was keen to discuss the trends and issues young people face. Her curiosity and desire to understand the next generation were inspiring, reflecting her belief in passing the torch to the leaders of tomorrow.

These lessons from Ms. Mwanawasa are more than just memories; they are guiding principles that I carry with me. In sharing them, I hope they continue to inspire others, especially the young people I work with. Her legacy is one of action, integrity, and empowerment—a legacy we can all strive to uphold.
