Reflections on PM Method and PM Methodology

Dear Mr. Mounir Ajam and BIVILLEPM Community,
I hope this message finds you well. After watching your insightful video, I wanted to share my reflections on PM Method and PM Methodology.
In your video, The PM Methodology is the Original Part of Methodological Process consisting of Multiple Methods, while PM Method when it’s Tailored, then it becomes a “Tailored Method”.
Both Methodology and Methods consist of 6 Parts as the image below and the video.
Notably, Scrum and Six-Sigma DMADV seem to lack alignment due to a deficiency of decision points at each stage and a lack of proper Project Life Cycle, unlike PRINCE2 and GPCCAR. Besides, it's not an End-to-end Project Life Cycle.
On the other hand, The PMBOK Guide is not even a PM Methodology or Method to begin with; it’s a framework to help think about a project. However, in PMBOK 7th Ed, it has included guidelines for tailoring and left out the important process groups in another material and has no specific Life cycle that is recommended to be tailored and still needs to work with a PM Method or Methodology before it could be used.
Furthermore, I observed that PM thought leadership (Trevor and Mounir) does not necessarily view a project as a subset of a business, encompassing both assets and operations on the asset owner's side. This is okay to call ASSET LIFE CYCLE, Project Life Cycle at the Asset Owner Side found in GPCCAR, AACE’s TCF, and Shell (Nigeria LNG Methodology). Feel free to disagree with my perspective on this matter, but my point still stands, and I’m with GPCCAR which I adapted based on my hands-on experience and because of my MBA.
I also try to eliminate Silo Project Management mindset as a "Total Business leader ????".

1 年Hi George, thanks for the mention. I'll address the two aspects you associated with me - projects as a subset of business, and the asset life cycle. I don't disagree that these are considerations or viewpoints, BUT, they are not universal. 'Project as subset', and 'project viewed through the asset life cycle' are only valid from the Owner perspective, not that of a Contractor. From an Owner viewpoint, yes, projects are a subset, and an enhancement to their core business. But for a Contractor, projects 'are' the business', not a subset. The same holds for viewing projects as assets. That only works if I as the Owner hold the asset for the entirety of the life-cycle. But as a project and PM, there's a handoff, from 'project' to 'operations'. The Owner may see it through the asset lens, but the PM, by definition, has an 'end' point in their project.
