The inaugural Thabo Mbeki Foundation Africa Peace and Security Dialogue was a monumental event, fostering a deeper understanding of the complexities and nuances of peace negotiations across our diverse continent.?
Objective and Partnerships?
The Annual African Peace and Security Dialogue aimed to provide a platform for African political and economic leaders, scholars, and policymakers to discuss current peace and security challenges, share best practices, and develop practical solutions. This initiative was a collaborative effort between the Institute of Global Dialogue, the Human Sciences Research Council, and the United Nations Development Programme, involving various stakeholders.?
Ensuring Broad Representation in Peace Negotiations
?One of the key themes explored was the principle of ensuring broad representation in peace negotiations. Africa, with its intricate tapestry of cultures, faith systems, languages, and histories, requires approaches that are as diverse as its people. Every voice must be heard, and every perspective considered to achieve sustainable peace.
?Stakeholder Engagement?
Notable stakeholders present at the event included representatives from the African Union , various non-governmental organizations like the African Leadership Centre at 英国伦敦大学 - 伦敦国王学院 , and various academic institutions like University of South Africa/Universiteit van Suid-Afrika local leaders such as Minister Ronald Lamula and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lusufi, and international peacekeeping bodies and heads of states and foreign ministries. Insights from these diverse participants underscored the necessity of a multi-faceted approach to peacekeeping.

?Empowering Women and Youth in Peacekeeping
?A significant focus was placed on the roles of women and youth in diplomacy and peacekeeping efforts, particularly in Sudan. Rabab Baldo Rabab.Baldo exemplary work served as a beacon of hope. Women and youth bring fresh insights and a unique perspective that can bridge gaps and foster understanding in even the most complex situations. Their active participation is not just beneficial but crucial for the success of peacekeeping missions. In conversation, Prof Hassan Keynan encouraged young people to stay in Africa and play a role in peace keeping efforts, especially our techies and he also noted how the enviroment needed to be condusive to retain Africa's talent. ?
Addressing Mental Health in Conflict Zones
?Delegates in the dialogue also touched upon the importance of considering the mental health of conflict victims, recognizing that psychological well-being is integral to the overall peace process. Addressing mental health issues was emphasized as a critical component of rebuilding and fostering long-term stability in post-conflict zones.?
Learning from History?
Reflecting on the Berlin Conference of 1884-1885, where European powers divided Africa without regard for ethnic and cultural boundaries, provides a lens to examine current conflicts. Colonial decisions have contributed to ongoing strife and instability, underscoring the need for strong, visionary leadership and a unified approach to governance and conflict resolution.
?
In conclusion, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Thabo Mbeki Foundation for their invitation and the invaluable opportunity to contribute and learn from this dialogue. I also wish to thank President Mbeki for his visionary leadership, encapsulated in his school of thought #Mbekism—and his enduring vision for Africa, the African Union, and the African Renaissance. His commitment to including diverse voices in his mission is inspiring and essential for the continued progress of our continent. Let us carry forward the insights gained from this dialogue, striving for an Africa that is peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous for all its inhabitants.
