Let's go back a decade when Google introduced us to an innovative idea: Google Cardboard. A low-cost Virtual Reality viewer that turned any smartphone into a virtual device, democratizing access to digital immersion.
Cardboard was simple, cheap, and accessible, captivating users and developers alike. Its cardboard design allowed the exploration of virtual worlds and the enjoyment of multimedia content in a very limited but unprecedented way. In 2016, six million units were distributed, providing one of the public's first significant contacts with VR.
Despite the initial enthusiasm, Cardboard faced challenges such as technical limitations and a lack of quality content. Although I personally had very cool experiences in educational contexts, it didn't take long for Cardboard to become obsolete.
Although discontinued, Google Cardboard is a reference in the history of Virtual Reality. It showed that innovation can be accessible and inspired future developments in VR technology. We remember Cardboard fondly as an important milestone on the path to more immersive and accessible digital experiences.
