Reflections from TCT: Great data will save lives

Reflecting on a few incredible days at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) conference 2023. The passion, brilliance, and humanity of the attendees was inspiring.??

But wow, I am shocked at the poor data being used to guide our healthcare system today. When I hear about the ADHERE registry providing 20-year-old data to guide how to treat patients in 2023, I am dumbfounded. 20 years ago, we had no Facebook, no Uber, no Spotify, etc. – all these businesses that shape our culture that are driven by data. Our healthcare system feels like it’s from a different era.??

That said, the innovation in cardiovascular devices over this timeframe was on display at the show and it was inspiring. But we use this old data to guide us?! When JAMA bemoans that it takes 17 years for research to transform the way we care for patients, I am confident that if we had complete, timely, and clean data available for research sooner, we would learn faster!??

I often reflect on what these specific examples mean for the people I love. I have a good family friend who experienced pulmonary embolism (PE) last year. PE is a blood clot in a pulmonary artery, affecting approximately 900,000 patients in the US each year. It is the third leading cause of cardiovascular mortality in the US, and it is the leading cardiovascular cause of in-hospital death.??

Today, Peter Monteleone MD, FACC, FSCAI , an interventional cardiologist at Ascension Health and associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin, shared a new peer-reviewed study published in JSCAI, showing that pulmonary embolism treatment options have potential serious adverse events. And those risks vary widely depending upon the device chosen for treatment.?

Peter and the co-authors used Truveta Data to unlock these insights. Talking to attendees, I am humbled by the potential for changing how thousands of patients per day will be treated differently now that this information is available. I look forward to supporting more incredible researchers to use Truveta to find the insights which will save lives.??

Quite a compelling screenshot there! I see it could be hard to boil down to just 4 choices, but the [continued] focus (and frustration) around data—or more specifically, lack of data and lack of data sharing—continues to surprise me, despite having heard it parroted for the last 15 years of my professional career as a data practitioner. This has popped up at least 4 times for me this week alone, each time making me think (and comment) how far we have come but how far we still have to go... and how the buzz would indicate that needs from the data seem to (still) be significantly—and now exponentially—outpacing progress of the data. Truveta seems to be closing a big gap there. Been fun to follow.
