Reflections from Davos, managing sustainability & compliance with GeoAI + supporting safer, more sustainable mining operations
Welcome to GeoAI Horizons - your monthly look at the intersection of geospatial data & artificial intelligence!
In this edition of GeoAI Horizons, we look at how GeoAI can support safer, more sustainable mining operations, some key takeaways from our time at Davos, and how the need for precise, visual, and verified geospatial data has never been more urgent for sustainability and compliance.
"Collaboration for the Intelligent Age" - Reflections from Davos
Last month, a delegation from Picterra traveled to Davos to participate in several events, including the World Economic Forum 's Annual Meeting and the unDavos Summit .
As Martina L?fqvist , our Head of Strategy & Partnerships described in her post, "the theme of this year’s World Economic Forum was “Collaboration for the Intelligent Age”, and it really reflected in the conversations on- and off stage."
She continues: "Many are concerned about the geopolitical changes, the role of AI, and the dark side of digitalization.
But at the same time, there’s plenty of hope.
Every person I spoke with is working on some form of a solution; be it a new way to create renewable energy, rethinking the approach to security, next generation social platforms, novel learning methods, and the list goes on…
However… There are two camps: one that is led by egotism (which is particularly concerning with recent changes around ESG commitments and a potential shift in focus for many) and another group of people led by altruism & collective action to create the solutions that our world so desperately needs.
Let’s gravitate towards the latter and leave a better legacy for the next generations!"
We also participated in a thought-provoking panel on the future of conservation alongside Walter Matter SA , Google Cloud , Planet , BBC , and Decarbonized. The key takeaways included:
??? The power of space-based data and AI to monitor conservation efforts at scale, enabling a more complete and continuous view of environmental change.
?? The essential collaboration between AI-driven analysis and local expertise—combining satellite insights with on-the-ground knowledge to drive meaningful action.
?? Real-world conservation efforts, from rainforest protection to wildlife habitat restoration, increasingly rely on AI to detect risks, track progress, and guide intervention strategies.
GeoAI can be used to tackle various conservation challenges, including biodiversity protection;
How GeoAI supports safer, more sustainable mining operations
Mining companies face growing pressure to improve safety while meeting stricter environmental and compliance standards. Geotechnical hazards like rockfalls and land instability pose operational risks and sustainability challenges—disrupting land use, increasing remediation costs, and impacting surrounding ecosystems.

By partnering with MecRoc Engenharia , a leading global mining company used Picterra ’s GeoAI platform to automate hazard identification—mapping cracks, erosion, and unstable rock formations faster and more precisely. This approach reduces field exposure, strengthens risk management, and supports more sustainable land-use planning.
“If you reduce the time people are on the mine site, you automatically reduce exposure to risk. It’s better to be in the office the most you can and go to the mine site with the more precise information you have.” Guilherme Ribas , Geological Engineer at MecRoc Engenharia .
?? Proactive risk management – Early detection of geotechnical hazards supports safer, more sustainable operations.
?? Reduced field exposure – Automated mapping limits time spent in hazardous areas, improving worker safety.
?? Better resource use – AI-powered analysis enables precise interventions, reducing unnecessary site disturbance.

Ensuring geospatial data accuracy for compliance and sustainability
The rapid rise of GeoAI is transforming how organizations approach compliance, sustainability, and operational efficiency. Yet, as reliance on geospatial data grows, so do the challenges—up to 50% of datasets contain errors that can undermine critical decision-making. From regulatory requirements like EUDR and CSRD to broader ESG reporting, ensuring data accuracy is no longer optional—it’s essential for maintaining trust and transparency.
Organizations must adopt automated diagnostics and correction techniques to bridge the gap between digital reporting and physical reality. GeoAI-driven solutions like Picterra Tracer are helping businesses ensure their geospatial data is structured, interoperable, and ready for analysis. These advancements streamline processes, reduce manual effort, and enhance integration with platforms like 微软 Sustainability Manager, Salesforce Net Zero Cloud, and SAP Sustainability Control Tower.
GeoAI’s potential goes beyond compliance, enabling new insight, efficiency, and accountability levels across industries. As automation reshapes geospatial workflows, now is the time to invest in solutions that enhance data integrity at scale.
