Reflections from 2 Years in Recruitment: Life Lessons for Professional Growth

Almost two years into my experience as a recruiter, having met over a thousand clients and candidates, I've never imagined the professional growth I would build in the world of recruitment. For those not familiar with the industry, it is a very fast-paced environment. Though it is not for everyone, those who choose to push through the challenges amidst the high-pressure stress or unstable outcomes find decades' worth of life wisdom. Here are my top five:

  1. Resilience and Discipline Beat Talent: I can't emphasize enough how resilience can take you far. As the saying goes, "It is only over when you choose to quit." Putting in the small work every day and building that momentum can propel you forward, no matter what challenges you face.
  2. You Become Who You Surround Yourself With: Surrounding yourself with successful people allows you to learn from them and continue to challenge yourself. I was fortunate enough to be in a high-performing team that pushed me to be at the top of my game. Surround yourself with people who make you want to push harder, aim higher, and challenge you to be one percent better than yesterday.
  3. Communication is a Skill Anyone Can Develop: I can't stress enough how much I used to hate answering phone calls before I chose to become a recruiter. I used to think that I could never be great at this job with my introverted self. However, after two years, I found myself engaging in meaningful conversations with a vast network of professionals and even with Country Managers. It is a skill anyone can learn through practice.
  4. Mistakes Are Your Best Friend: It wasn't the successes or achievements I had that made me a better recruiter; it was the hundreds of mistakes, rejections, and unfortunate events that provided major growth in my career. Don't be afraid to make mistakes; rather, use them as a driving force to become better.
  5. Motivation is Driven by Your Key Purpose: Your purpose is the anchor that will keep you grounded in your journey. Is it to help build better lives? To support the success of a company? Or to develop yourself? Understanding your "Why" will keep you moving when things get rough.

These are just some of the many lessons that recruitment has shared, and there is still more to learn. If you are someone who is thinking about going into recruitment or has already started their career in it, know that it is a career that can bring many valuable life lessons. I have personally met some of the greatest leaders in it. May this career bring new discoveries and endless personal growth that will bring you unlimited possibilities.
