Reflections on the Fall 2024 Semester
Luis Morales
Executive in Residence with Engineering Management Program at Duke University, Engineering Professor, Founder Calu Consulting LLC
Yesterday, I hosted the last session of my Management in High Tech Industries (MENG-540, Section 7) class (see pictures enclosed) and with that, I wrapped up my Fall 2024 teaching commitments at Duke.? For me, this semester has been one of transition back to full time teaching after completing my 3-year tenure as Director of the Master of Engineering Management. ??In addition to the Management class, I was also teaching my Software Quality Management elective class (EGRMGMT 575) and the MEM Seminar class (co-taught with Dr. Xiaoyan Hu).
While all of these courses challenged me in different ways, I must admit that the MENG 540 course represented a unique challenge for me.? While the focus of the course (preparing engineering students for eventual transition to management and/or leadership roles) was well within the scope of my experience, the architecture & many of the concepts covered (particularly those related to behavioral science) were new to me. The course was initially created by Dr. Theodore Ryan and it has been enhanced by Professor Allegra Jordan, Prof. Wendy Corbett and Dr. La Tondra Murray.? I’m grateful to my Duke colleagues for the foundational work they've done and for sharing with me (particularly Dr. Murray) the materials that allowed me to prepare the class this semester. ?I plan to continue adding (and sharing) my own content, expertise, and perspectives to the course each term.?
?
I want to extend my thanks to my co-instructor for EGRMGMT 501 – Dr. Xiaoyan Hu and all Teaching Assistants that partnered with me to deliver a great learning experience for our students.? These include: MENG 540 - Namisha Metha and Lily Xu, EGRMGMT 575 – Lily Xu, EGRMGMT 501 – Dhairya Kamdar (lead TA), Prerna Sultania, Suraj Nair, Rahul Bajaj and Melody Mi.

?
Finally, to all the 225 students I had the privilege to engage with across my classes this semester, thank you!? Through our interactions inside and outside the classroom, you have enriched and reinforced the purpose to my life. I hope you gained valuable skills, lessons & experience in class that will serve you well in your career and your life. ?Please stay in touch!
