Reflections on Expo 2020 and the launch of the R&D Postdoctoral Challenge

Last week at Expo 2020 in Dubai, AstraZeneca launched the R&D Postdoctoral Challenge to help accelerate ideas to transform the treatment of some of the world’s most complex diseases. A big thank you to all who attended, especially Prof Goldstein, Dr Jenni Nordborg, Prof Chris Lowe and Dr Asma Al Mannaei who joined the lively panel discussion on the future of R&D. It was fantastic to be able to hear their different views, insights and passions when it comes to drug discovery and exploring #WhatScienceCanDo.??

I truly believe that central to the future of R&D is recognising that great ideas with the potential to transform treatment can come from anywhere. Different professional backgrounds, cultures and healthcare systems all support diversity in talent and thought, enabling us to approach R&D challenges in new ways. Embracing diversity has made AstraZeneca what it is today: open, collaborative and at the cutting-edge of science.?

With the launch of the R&D Postdoctoral Challenge my hope is that we will encourage early talent to push the boundaries of science to discover life-changing medicines. Geographic location should not pose a barrier to scientific exploration, which is why we are seeking proposals from outstanding candidates based anywhere around the globe. Shortlisted applicants will have the opportunity to pitch their research proposals to a world-leading judging panel consisting of AstraZeneca and external life science leaders, with the potential to be awarded a fully funded postdoctoral position at AstraZeneca.???

Successful candidates will not only have the opportunity to join our diverse and vibrant scientific community, but will also have access to the expertise, compounds, novel tools and technologies, and mentoring support they need to turn their ideas into reality.
