Reflections on DEI in the RGV

As we begin to wrap up Diversity Awareness Month, it's crucial to remember that diversity is not just a one-month celebration—it is a way of life, a value that enriches all communities. ?

As pediatric therapists in the Rio Grande Valley, we are privileged to witness the profound impact of diversity, equality, and inclusion on the children we work with. Our vibrant community celebrates a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and backgrounds, which enriches our understanding of the unique needs of each child. Embracing diversity means recognizing the importance of tailoring our therapeutic approaches to meet the specific requirements of every individual while working towards the greatest possible level of functional independence.

In our commitment to equality and inclusion, we ensure that all children, regardless of their background, receive the care and support they need to thrive. This approach not only fosters an inclusive environment but also empowers children to reach their full potential, irrespective of their differences. At Milestones, diversity, equality, and inclusion are not just words; they are the cornerstones of our practice, enabling us to create a brighter future for all the children we serve.

Our greatest wish is that the world would make time to embrace the opportunity to connect with and learn from individuals of the many different traditions, languages, and abilities right in our own neighborhoods. There are abundant resources throughout South Texas with many opportunities for those looking to champion diversity year-round and the following are a jumping off point of local resources we can all easily access to expand our journeys toward a more inclusive world:

• Cultural Events: Attend any of the MANY cultural festivals, art exhibitions, and celebrations throughout the upper and lower valley all year long. While there are too many of these events to list, here are a few: The 30th Annual Rio Grande Birding Festival, The McAllen Holiday Parade and The RGV Special Olympics. Each of these events offer a window into the diverse tapestry of South Texas and provide a chance for us to celebrate with others. Explore our Valley-you are going to love it! • Local Nonprofits: Engage with local nonprofit organizations working tirelessly to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. Consider volunteering or donating to support their efforts. Groups like Capable Kids, C.A.M.P. University, Easter Seals , and Team Mario are always looking for volunteers.
• Networking Opportunities: Join diversity and inclusion networks or affinity groups in South Texas. These communities are passionate about fostering a more inclusive environment and can provide valuable connections and resources. Workforce Solutions is a great source. And definitely, don't miss the RGV H.I.R.E.S Inclusive Job Fair in late November.
• Awareness Campaigns: Keep an eye out for awareness campaigns and diversity-themed initiatives. South Texas businesses and organizations frequently run programs to promote diversity, and your involvement can make a significant impact. Follow the Center for Diversity and Inclusion and DREAM Resource Center at UTRGV and the Disability Chamber of Commerce, RGV on Instagram for current campaigns.
