Reflections at the dawn of the New Year

As we stand on the brink of a new year, it's only natural to reflect on the moments that defined the past 12 months—those instances of truth, both triumphant and disastrous, that shape our lives. Personally, 2023 has been a transformative year for me, marked by a change in my professional path after 14 years at TP and a commitment to lifelong desires like taking up tennis lessons. As I jot down my reflections, I feel compelled to share these insights with my network, eager to receive your well-intentioned comments.

Let's dive in.

  • Choose Courage Over Comfort in Adversity: When faced with challenges, opt for courage over comfort. It might seem daunting, but conflicting with your moral compass is a greater burden. Embracing the warrior within, even when it feels easier to choose the path of the queen, has been my guiding principle despite the lessons from Danielle Macleod (she/her) .
  • Value Yourself Beyond Professional Achievements: While professional accomplishments are commendable and contribute to personal growth, it's crucial not to solely measure your worth through them. Balancing professional achievements with personal milestones is paramount for overall well-being.
  • Embrace Lifelong Learning: A commitment to continuous learning is your passport to staying relevant. In a rapidly evolving world, the pursuit of knowledge remains the constant that enriches both personal and professional aspects of life.
  • Cultivate Empathy and Emotional Intelligence: True leadership involves understanding and resonating with the emotions of those around you. Cultivating empathy and emotional intelligence fosters stronger connections, creating a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Foster Adaptability and Resilience: In the face of uncertainty and change, a resilient leader adapts and thrives. Cultivate adaptability and resilience, turning challenges into opportunities for growth and innovation.

How does leadership tie into these reflections? The connection is clear—leadership is intricately linked to character, more so than skill. The traits mentioned above—courage, self-worth, a thirst for learning, empathy, and resilience—are the building blocks of strong leadership.

In closing, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on your own journey this past year. What lessons have you learned? What moments of courage have defined you? Share your thoughts and let's embark on the new year with a collective commitment to growth, resilience, authenticity, and empathetic leadership.

Looking forward to reading your opinions on the matter!

Thank you for this article, Eleni Rapti. I really enjoyed it. In 2023 I learned more than anything that resilence was my key to professional growth and opportunities. Things here at TP can be rough (just like at any company) and finding chances to grow and learn through the processes has really helped me. A few years ago I started putting my personal wins ahead of my professional wins and found that it helped foster a better sense of well-being AND fostered a desire to be more successful at work. Happy 2024!

Thank you very much Eleni Rapti for sharing these thoughts! True and insightful give me the opportunity to focus and emphasize on two among them that I find very important. The first is to value oneself beyond professional achievements, as many people, many women, may find themselves in challenging situations in their personal life in parallel with their job. Encouragement, understanding can give them that one boost to improve their life and reflect that improvement to their work as well. The second, is practicing empathy and genuine connection as a leadership skill. In a world of data and often distance, true leaders need to approach their teams in a group and individual level, support, empower their colleagues and give the example of leading the team being an active part of the team. Thank you again and have a wonderful new year!
