Reflections on attending the One-Day Feminist Conference 2024 for the first time

By Soorvi Desraj Shrestha

My name is Soorvi Desraj Shrestha, and I recently joined Ujyalo Foundation as a Chief Executive Support. Just three weeks into my role, I found myself involved in organizing the One-Day Feminist Conference (OFC) 2024 which was a surreal and exciting experience. The conference theme was ‘Feminist Agenda: Tools and Strategies for Change,’ and I hoped this event would discuss important conversations and inspire collective action.

The conference surpassed my expectations, with powerful sessions on feminist leadership, self-care, and intersectionality. The opening plenary on ‘Reimagining Power: Feminist Leadership Now’ greatly motivated me, emphasizing the need to disrupt oppressive systems and redefine power structures. The session on unpaid care work showcased the often overlooked economic value of caregiving. The challenges such as addressing caste-based discrimination within feminist spaces were also brought to light, reminding us of the ongoing work needed to create inclusive movements.

Participating in the OFC 2024 for the first time, deepened my understanding of feminism, particularly the importance of intersectionality. The event inspired me to take more proactive steps in my feminist journey, particularly in advocating for marginalized communities and challenging systemic inequalities. The discussions on dismantling privileges and building alliances across diverse topics have motivated me to contribute more actively to feminist work, within and beyond the Ujyalo Foundation.

Overall, the One-Day Feminist Conference 2024 was a powerful and empowering experience. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of the organizing committee and to contribute to such an important event. As we continue to advance the feminist agenda, I am inspired to take action and work towards a more just and equitable society.?
