Reflections on 3 days at the largest home-furnishings show in the world
180 buildings and 11.5 million square feet of show space.
Expectedly, HPMKT has changed over the 25 years that I've attended. It's evolved technologically and ballooned in terms of facilities and the number of exhibitors and attendees.
It wasn't always friendly to interior designers but now it welcomes us in masses as exhibitors coddle our potential annuity.
I attended in search of inspiration and resources for existing and future projects - innovative ideas executed with grace and sensitivity to the human form.
Not surprisingly, what I found in the 20 miles covered was a lot of repetition - TRENDS, manufactured in a variety of quality. How this actually happens is truly baffling to me.
A few of the items I encountered in high double digits: little curved white boucle chairs. Boucle in general - on sofas and ottomans, also woven pendant lights, nesting coffee tables, griege wood finish - all coming out of my ears today.
As I walked through the show, I asked myself: Is it comfortable? Is it the best version of itself it can be in terms of beauty, construction, and function? Is it priced right and easy to get? Is it a product my clients could use?
Only a few met my criteria and many were from companies I've supported for years - those that have evolved aged with grace. If you'd like to discuss what I found for yourself please don't hesitate to reach out, and thank you for reading my first blog post!!
