Reflections on the 2023 LGBTQ+ Defence Awards

Reflections on the 2023 LGBTQ+ Defence Awards

It was an immense honour and a privilege to attend the inaugural LGBTQ+ Defence Awards on 17 October 2023. Hosted by TV presenter and BBC News anchor Jane Hill, it took place in the remarkable Grand Hall of the Grand Connaught in London’s Covent Garden.

The evening celebrated LGBTQ+ inclusion and representation across the whole UK defence ecosystem. It formally recognised those that advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and strive for an inclusive future, where everyone can maximise their full potential.

I was exceptionally proud that amongst the finalists were four of our very own colleagues from Recruiting Group (part of Capita RPP), championing EDI for both our Capita and Military colleagues, and for those who have the ambition of joining the British Army .

I would like to congratulate my colleagues for being finalists in the following categories:

·?????? ‘Advocate of the Year’ Award Finalist – Rose Worthy (D&I Operations Manager)

·?????? ‘Rising Star of the Year’ Award Finalist – Gareth Sterry (Change Communications Manager)

·?????? ‘Ally of the Year’ Award Finalist – Emma Ellis (Communications & Engagement Coordinator)

·?????? ‘Outstanding Achiever of the Year’ – LCpl Amy Cowen (Outreach Team 2 Sub Team Member)

“We never thought we would see such a day.” Sentiments echoed both by those in attendance and Colonel Dame Kelly Holmes who eloquently spoke during the ceremony about the impact that historic mistreatment of serving LGBTQ+ personnel had on her, during her time in the Forces.

In my view, the LGBTQ+ Defence Awards symbolise a key turning point for UK Defence. They recognise the prejudices and injustices of the past, celebrate the present successes of those championing the LGBTQ+ community, and look to the future, where inclusion isn't privilege, but a human right.

It was noted by Andrew Murrison MP that the Awards were the first occasion where the diverse spectrum of UK Defence gathered to highlight and promote LGBTQ+ inclusion. Needless to say, it will not be the last.

As we continue to recruit tomorrow’s Army today, we will demonstrate through our work that a successful career and a sense of belonging in the British Army is not reserved for the few, but achievable by all.
