Reflection On Year End Reviews

Reflection On Year End Reviews

This year's year-end reviews have been enlightening, not merely a routine but a series of interactions that have deeply resonated with me, perhaps more so than ever. As I transition to a new phase in my career, these conversations have taken on a new depth, reflecting a commitment to genuine engagement and understanding. (I will be transparent: there have been some years that this was a chore, and I wanted to check it off the box).

Any issues should be addressed in one-on-one meetings throughout the year, making the year-end review a time to recap, reflect, and realign. This year, we dove into what we did well, areas for improvement, and our aspirations and goals. But it was more than that—it was about connecting on a human level, understanding each other's journeys and dreams, and setting a course for mutual growth.

One review stood out where an employee shared an inspiring personal transformation. This individual's ability to identify a weakness, compose a strategy, and implement it successfully was impressive. But what struck me was the underlying story—a narrative of overcoming a personal tragedy with resilience and determination. This conversation was a reminder of the power of attentive listening and the profound connections it can foster. Without truly listening, we wouldn’t have had this personal moment where this employee showed emotions; I was grateful for our shared opportunity.

Another interaction was with an apprentice, often seen as moody due to our limited interactions, mainly because of their remote work location. This year's review, held in a space of openness and trust, revealed the layers beneath the surface—family dynamics, personal struggles, and health issues. Through careful conversation, we created an environment in which we listened, sympathized, and then asked permission to provide some feedback. It transformed our perception and understanding of this individual, showcasing the transformative power of empathy and genuine engagement. At the end of the meeting, we were all laughing, and I saw the smile, and I told this person you have an infectious smile; let the world see it.

These experiences have reinforced my belief in the importance of face-to-face interactions. While technology and remote work offer convenience, they can sometimes distance us from the subtle yet crucial human elements that foster genuine connection and understanding. Hence, I am committed to regularly seeing each team member in the office to discuss work and connect, observe, and ensure their well-being.

This past year has also been a reminder of the delicate balance between kindness and accountability. Leadership demands firmness and clarity but should always be rooted in compassion and a sincere desire to support and uplift.

As we progress, I've encouraged the team to commit to nurturing an environment where each member feels valued, heard, and supported in their personal and professional journey. Embrace this journey with openness, understanding, and a shared commitment to excellence and growth, set clear expectations, and have difficult conversations constructively.
