Reflection on <Mastery> by Robert GREENE

Create positive impact through lean + coaching: Career coach
Everyone has their own potential to become his/her own master and we need to learn and discover in our lifetime. We are responsible for what happened to us, we need to keep on creating impact through the journey to mastery. In the journey to our own mastery, we need the courage to be different, unique, and original from the social norm, so that the world is diversified and an ECO living environment for everyone. Personal success is just a secondary byproduct. ??
Reading the <mastery> by Robert GREENE, there are 3 perspectives that struck me to reflect on.
The first one is that everyone has the potential to find his/her own Mastery. Everyone holds his fortune in his/her own hands, like a sculptor… the skill to mold the material into what we want must be learned and attentively cultivated. This first sentence struck me immediately that every one of us has a great unique inner power inside of ourselves, it is our life journey to discover and learn to practice it till we become masters of ourselves. This also reminds me of one of my favorite American TV Series <Heroes>, every hero has his/her own unique power to be discovered and learned how to use it properly to serve others.?
Believing everyone has the potential to become a master of his/her own <vocation>, is one of the basic coaching assumptions. We trust everyone to be able to learn and discover their destiny and path to their mastery. ?As a coach, help people in their journey of discovery and learning, by a mirror for reflections and evoking awareness of coachees, being an accompany in their discovering and learning journey: who we are, what are the different versions of reality, where are we now, where we want to go, what we discovered and learned, how we move forward… ?
The 2nd most strike me is every one of us has responsibility for this world, we are responsible for what happens to us, and we have ownership of our fate. ?We shall not be passive on what happened to us: Climate change, Consumerist, Ukraine War… We need to do our best even if it seems we can’t change them as individuals. The misconception is we can’t change them as we have only small power as individuals. The story of the beach boy picking the fish one by one and returning them to the sea, has inspired many people to do their part even just a tiny portion. If every one of us becomes the master in our way of serving the world and others, holding firm to our beliefs in building a better and safer world, we can change the fate of everyone and the surroundings around us.
We shall try to become our masters to solve the issues around us, we shall not leave it to others. We can make a difference or impact on the people around us, persistently increase our impact on others by discovering and becoming our mastery, and make the world a better place for every one of us now and future generations. ?
The 3rd strike me most is how we can succeed in finding our mastery. In the journey of the discovery of the inner core or power, very often, we lose to the social norm in the battle, we tend to be the same as others to survive as our human basic instinct. We make a living that is similar to others, we are classified by the definitions of our careers, we do other people's doings, and we lost originality and uniqueness by following the majority.
In Asian culture, harmony is important, we hide and retreat from our desire when there is conflict with family and the environment around us, we are taught and educated to be <乖> sage and follow the order since we were young. We bury our interests inside of ourselves to serve the family/community interest especially when we are the elder son or sister.?Take care of the younger ones to scarify our own study/learning or interest. This could be one of the dark side of traditional Asian culture. Gladly, the new millennium generation is eager to search for what makes sense to them, and their path, rather than following their parents' paved path for them. ??
As I live in France now, the culture is different. Letting every child discover and develop their path is the common belief of their parents. A small story that my wife shared with me. When she noticed a child showing bored and not playing with others when she visited a French friend, the friend rejected her offer to play with that child, told my wife to leave the child alone, and said she will find a way to overcome her boredom.?It was a culture shock for my wife and me. Most French parents want their children to find their path and be responsible for their fate. People are not afraid to express their opinions and feelings, they actively look for what interests them, and what their passions are. They take their fate in charge and dare to be original and different.
Have you discovered your mastery? Are you on the journey of becoming yourself? Are you daring to be different from the social normal? I wish you have the desire to challenge your own identity and feel best about yourself!?? ??

1 年Hey Michael. Good sharing. I was just reading this wonderfully inspiring book again recently. Robert’s sharing and telling of the mastery topic some how reminded me of how as agile practitioners we have and may relate to the Japanese concept of Shu Ha Ri. It really puts in another dimension of internalizing what we may known as craftmanship, artisanship and attaining the highest form of our practices. By being committed and going beyond benefitting of oneself and when do we get so robust in our skills to skillfully detached and elevate into another realm; the very mastery of our own. And with that level of attainment, we may harness or indirectly bring immeasurable impact to our world and people around us. I have also enjoyed your contextualization as an anecdotal observation to your current environment. Stay well and cheers.
