A Reflection on Gratitude

Do I say I’m grateful or do I truly live gratefully? This week, I spent some time reflecting upon these words.

What does it mean to “live gratefully”? To me, living gratefully is more than feeling appreciation for what we have. We begin thinking about possessions, wealth, health, family, friends or any of the other items on the list of life’s pleasures and privileges.  If we’re honest, this is where most often we get stuck -- with ourselvesOuch.

Living with gratitude is more about others - a selfless act. When we live a life of gratitude, we intentionally increase our awareness of the blessings that are constantly unfolding around us, thus compelling us to express our gratefulness generously. To live gratefully, you have to do something. So, I challenge you, as I’m challenging myself, to begin living gratefully.

Here are ten ideas to start -- please comment and add your thoughts:

  1. Say thank you – Not only to the barista at your favorite coffee shop, but say thank you to your spouse, significant other and/or children (Sometimes we need a reminder to express appreciation to those who we love the most). Furthermore, don’t just say thank you, but do thankless acts.
  2. Think of people who have had the most impact on your life and write them a note to tell them.
  3. Volunteer in the community and give to those in need.
  4. Spend quality time with family and friends – not watching TV together – have a conversation!
  5. Acknowledge the contribution of those around you.
  6. Compliment your co-workers or colleagues on their unique talents and strengths.
  7. Take part in an effort or initiative that will enhance the lives of those around you.
  8. Turn your struggles and complaints into praises and statements of appreciation.
  9. Listen for the needs of others.
  10. Self-assess how you can improve in your everyday living.
