REFLECTION: Four utensils do create noise naturally

Phrases are important because of their high degree of compression and expressive power; they summarize complex aspects or situations very well. They motivate us; energize us; empower us; and possibly puzzle us too.

I have grown up in India - the land of Mahabharat, the epic battleground. A land where women are goddesses in the temple, but can be treated harshly outside. I have seen the wisdom in question to justify the unacceptable behavior - VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN & CHILDERN.

Women are universally considered a weaker sex. Historically, men have displayed their aggression through violence. It was, and still is, an universal practice.

A person beats his wife. Then the elders - including mother-in-law and sisters-in-law who themselves are women - in the family and community try to restore order and peace.

How?

They don't question the man. They try to calm and pacify the bruised woman by using the inherited wisdom - FOUR UTENCILS DO MAKE NOISE. Accept your fate. Don't argue, don't question. Go to kitchen and prepare the next meal.

After the World War II, female activists and intellectuals brought domestic violence to the forefront of public consciousness. But the situation has not changed dramatically. It is the same old story.

In temples, Keertans (chanting) are organized in the afternoon. In Keertans, harmoniums and manjira (two small brass bowls) are used. And manjiras produce so harmonious sound.

We must change our attitudes. We MUST not use phrases, inherited wisdoms to justify BAD behaviors.

NO one has right to abuse others physically or mentally. When we use manjira, we have to make effort, do synchronization to produce harmonious, rhythmic sound. Similarly, in relationships, both parties must work together to bring peace, rhythm and tranquility in life.

Violence and physical abuse must never be justified.
