A reflection on British Science Week's theme of time
This year science week is on the theme of “time”; something that is fascinating to think about in the context of AWE, deterrence, and our mission. Looking back, our history is phenomenal, both in terms of the pace of change and the duration of our endeavour. It is 92 years since Chadwick discovered the neutron. William Penney would have been 23. AWE has been here for 75 years, and we started Continuous at Sea Deterrent (CASD) 56 years ago.
Today is an exciting time and the future is going to be very interesting. The need for new capabilities will drive us to future systems and upgrades as the global threats to our deterrent change in the coming decades. We will be the go-to provider for government in defence nuclear and threat reduction and will be sought after as a collaborator by all of UK plc including universities, Catapult Centres and other national labs.
