Reflecting on an year as IET President

Today marks my final day as President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). It has been an absolute honour to lead this incredible institution over the past year, and I'd like to share some highlights from our journey together.

Strengthening Governance and Leadership

We've reinforced our commitment to excellence in governance and regulatory compliance. Our Trustees have guided us through evolving challenges, ensuring transparency, integrity, and effective oversight in all our operations.

Promoting Diversity and Inclusion

A significant milestone was the strategic acquisition of WISE (Women in Science and Engineering). This step forward aligns perfectly with our mission to foster inclusivity within engineering and technology, strengthening our influence in promoting diversity across the sector.

Advancing AI and Digital Futures

Hosting the President’s Virtual Roadshow on AI was pivotal for engaging our global audience on artificial intelligence and digital futures. We focused on co-creating the IET Digital Futures Position and promoting equality and inclusion. I'm excited about the forthcoming whitepaper led by Chris Knibb, which will encapsulate our collective insights.

Thought Leadership

We positioned the IET as a thought leader through high-impact media engagements:

Our research on AI consumer perceptions in the UK, the COP28 Green Skills Survey, and the India Future Tech Congress, all received significant media attention, reinforcing our influence on AI ethics and sustainability. We were featured in BBC World Business, BBC News, Daily Mail, The Times of India, The Financial Express, and India Today, highlighting technological advancements and sharing our vision for the future.

Looking Ahead

I hand over the presidency to Warren East and I am confident that he will drive the IET to new heights. Ed Almond, our Chief Executive and Secretary and the staff will continue to thrive and lead with integrity and vision.

Thank you to our Trustees, members, staff, and all who have supported us throughout this incredible journey. It's been an unforgettable year, and I'm excited to participate in what the future holds for the IET under Warren's guidance.

Here's to engineering a better world together.
