Yesterday, on June 8th, people worldwide came together to celebrate World Oceans Day. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the oceans' vast and vital role in our lives, ecosystems, and the planet's health. The theme for World Oceans Day 2024, "Awaken New Depths," urged us to explore, understand, and protect the unseen and uncharted territories of our oceans.
The Importance of Our Oceans
Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface and are crucial for sustaining life. They regulate the global climate, provide a significant portion of the world’s oxygen -50%, and support incredible biodiversity. Oceans also play a vital role in the economy, offering livelihoods to millions of people through fishing, tourism, and maritime industries.
However, our oceans face unprecedented threats from pollution (Specifically Plastic pollution), overfishing, climate change, and habitat destruction. World Oceans Day was a call to action, urging everyone to take responsibility for preserving these critical ecosystems for future generations.
"Awaken New Depths": Exploring the Theme
The 2024 theme, "Awaken New Depths," invited us to delve deeper into the mysteries of the ocean. It emphasized the need for scientific exploration and discovery to uncover the unknown aspects of marine environments. By understanding these hidden depths, we can better grasp the challenges our oceans face and develop innovative solutions to protect them.
Exploring new depths is not just about physical exploration; it's also about fostering a deeper connection and awareness among individuals and communities. This theme encouraged us to rethink our relationship with the ocean, inspiring actions that promote sustainability and conservation. It called for a collective effort to unveil the ocean's secrets, appreciate its beauty and importance, and take meaningful steps to ensure its health for future generations.

Celebrating World Oceans Day at Kijani Beach, Mombasa
To mark World Oceans Day, I Joined From Waste to Work and other partners to clear over 750 kg of marine plastic waste from Kijani Beach, Mombasa. This collaborative effort was part of our commitment to protecting marine environments and promoting sustainable practices.
During the event and the Ocean Concert that followed, we had the opportunity to raise awareness about marine plastic pollution. We emphasized the dual nature of plastics - a boon or a bane, underscoring the waste potential as a resource, through reusing, upcycling, and recycling. These practices also create employment and livelihood opportunities, especially for the most marginalized young people in the value chain. Our "From Waste to Work" project targets recovering and repurposing 6,000 tonnes of waste, with it saving the 4,000 tonnes of emissions that could be released to the environment, and creating decent work for 3,900 young people in the waste value chain The project not only helps deal with climate change but also provides a model for creating sustainable and decent work that can be replicated in other communities.
As we celebrate and reflect on World Oceans Day, it's crucial to acknowledge the looming threat of plastic pollution. Research suggests that by 2050, there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish if current trends continue. This alarming prediction underscores the urgent need to rethink our use of plastics and adopt sustainable practices. By transforming waste into valuable products, projects like "From Waste to Work" can play a significant role in mitigating this crisis.
