Reflecting on the "Oxygen Mask"? analogy

Reflecting on the "Oxygen Mask" analogy

During each travel and just before the plane takes off, we are reminded about the behavior in case of emergency. The oxygen mask, which will drop from the overhead locker should be placed on our mouth and nose first, and only then, we can help others with their masks.

Never, ever the other way around.

While it may sound selfish, logically speaking it makes absolute sense.

If we run out of oxygen ourselves, what chances do we have of helping others? None.

Last week, during many conversations, some with friends, while others in a work environment, the analogy of the oxygen mask was brought up frequently.

It became a common theme, that in these turbulent times, we:

  • Too often forget about the different needs we have and the importance of giving them attention.
  • Forget about the importance of listening to them and addressing them.
  • In other words, we deprive ourselves of a healthy oxygen supply. ?

Over time, these unmet needs start to show symptoms.

Often, these symptoms are severe and too often the loved ones are affected too.

Stress. Burnout. Physical and Mental Health Issues. Autoimmune Issues. Cancer. Anxiety. Depression. Obesity. The list goes on.

Because how can we look after others, how can we give if our own oxygen supply is running low?

I invite you to:

  • Take a moment to reflect on this analogy.
  • Take care here and now of your needs and your well-being. Do not wait for when it reaches the emergency level.
  • And I invite you to lead a life where you and your needs are the top priority for You.

So that together, we can build a healthier world where we can look after others.
