Reflecting on National Apprenticeship Week 2025

Reflecting on National Apprenticeship Week 2025

This year’s theme – Skills for Life – is something we really connect with. Apprenticeships are about more than just learning the job, they’re about gaining the skills that stay with you for the long haul.

At Financial Affairs, we’ve seen our apprentices grow, learn, and become integral parts of the team. So this week, we’ve been shining a spotlight on some of them – along with hearing from our CEO, Laurence O’Connor, on why apprenticeships are such a big deal for us.

A word from our CEO Laurence O'Connor

Apprenticeships are a core part of how we do things at Financial Affairs. We've always believed in bringing in fresh talent and giving them the opportunity to learn on the job. And it’s worked.

Laurence said: “We’ve always had a focus on investing in young people. Apprenticeships allow us to bring in eager, passionate individuals and help them develop into professionals. Around 20% of our workforce are apprentices, and they bring a great energy to the company.”

It’s not just about technical skills – it’s about finding the right attitude.

“We’re looking for people who want to learn, who have the right mindset, and who get stuck in. Apprenticeships aren’t just about teaching – we learn a lot from them, too.”

Harry Smith – Claims Apprentice

Harry started his journey with Financial Affairs as a Claims Apprentice six months ago.

In that short time, he’s transformed his approach to client calls, going from nervous to confident. It’s been brilliant to see him grow. He’s learned so much by just getting stuck into the work and using the support around him.

His communication skills have really improved, and it’s clear that he’s ready for more responsibility. We’re looking forward to seeing where his apprenticeship takes him next.

Gaining confidence and communication skills

Izzy Beechey – Insurance & Risk Apprentice

Izzy has been balancing work and study, and she’s absolutely smashed it.

She’s really grown in confidence and skill, particularly in how she communicates with clients. Whether it’s through email or on the phone, she’s taken on more responsibility and faced every challenge with a smile.

Izzy’s journey shows how an apprenticeship can help you build confidence and grow in your role. She’s excited about what comes next, and so are we!

From juggling to thriving

Wiktor Dolgan – Financial Planner Administrator Apprentice

Wiktor joined the team as a Financial Planner Administrator Apprentice and has really embraced the opportunity to develop his skills.

He’s discovered just how important communication is in building strong client relationships.

He’s also appreciated the balance his apprenticeship gives him, allowing him to learn and grow without feeling overwhelmed.

Victor’s journey shows how apprenticeships can help develop a range of skills that will serve you throughout your career. He’s set for a bright future!

Developing skills for the future

Catherine Ormerod – Support Specialist

Catherine started with us as an apprentice, and now she’s an essential part of our team as a Support Specialist.

She’s a perfect example of how an apprenticeship can provide a solid foundation for career growth. Her apprenticeship gave her the hands-on experience she needed to hit the ground running.

Catherine has really made the most of the opportunities she had, and it’s been fantastic to see her succeed and move forward in her career.

From apprentice to specialist

Bradley Wolstenholme – Financial Planning Administrator (Past Apprentice)

Bradley is another example of how apprenticeships can fast-track your career.

Starting with us as an apprentice, he’s now managing his own client book and stepping into leadership roles. The communication and leadership skills he gained during his apprenticeship have been key to his success.

Bradley’s story shows that apprenticeships aren’t just about getting started – they’re a great way to launch your career and develop the skills you need to succeed.

Building leadership and communication Skills

Why Apprenticeships matter at Financial Affairs

At Financial Affairs, apprenticeships are more than just a way to learn a job – they’re about building a strong foundation for the future.

Apprentices get the chance to develop real-world skills while contributing to the company. And we get the chance to invest in the next generation of professionals.

We believe in giving apprentices the support, training, and opportunities they need to grow and build Skills for Life.

It’s about helping them develop not just technical knowledge, but essential soft skills like communication, leadership, and problem-solving that will serve them throughout their careers.
