Reflecting on my Two-Year Anniversary working in PNG.

Reflecting on my Two-Year Anniversary working in PNG.

As the Gold Coast Branch Manager, PNG along with my role as an Executive Recruiter/Head-Hunter, I reflect on my two-year journey specialising in vacancies within Papua New Guinea.

As I celebrate my two-year milestone with Peopleconnexion PNG and reflect on my experiences over the past two years, I wish to express my gratitude to Kristine Berry , Managing Director, and Stephen Mead , Country Director in PNG, for your continued support and guidance. Last but not least, I am grateful for my exceptional team and colleagues.

These past two years have been transformative. After relocating back home during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic following nearly 20 years abroad, I never anticipated finding another organisation that aligns so closely with my personal and professional values, similar to my previous employer of 17 years. Yes, I appreciate stability! ??

I am particularly thankful for the opportunity to contribute to communities through initiatives like our Pathways Program, both in Australia and PNG. The ethos of our organisation, emphasising values such as happiness, humility, and hunger, resonates deeply with me. Witnessing the entire team embracing these values and collaborating seamlessly has been inspiring. I am blessed to not only be part of an amazing organisation, but also to collaborate with the remarkable people of PNG.

Understanding PNG's approach to employment is deeply rooted in its cultural values and traditions. Local candidates often possess a unique set of skills, knowledge, and work ethics that reflect the country's rich heritage. Understanding and respecting these local nuances is crucial for effective recruitment. Embracing PNG's approach involves acknowledging the significance of community ties, cultural awareness, and the importance of mentorship in professional development.

Having had the privilege of working in various countries in my career, PNG stands out as a unique and honourable experience. It is indeed the Land of the Unexpected. These two years have been incredibly enriching, prompting significant personal and professional growth.

As I celebrate my two-year anniversary with Peopleconnexion and my 19-year journey in recruitment, I find myself pondering on my reflections working in the PNG market over the past 2 years which include the below;

Fostering Genuine Professional Relationships in the Context of Economic Development

In the realm of recruitment, the importance of cultivating authentic relationships cannot be overstated, especially when considering the future development of a country within an emerging economy like PNG. Building meaningful connections goes beyond the task of identifying suitable candidates; it plays a pivotal role in contributing to the long-term progress of the nation and its people.

Within the closely-knit professional networks, I understand a mere public presence is insufficient to attract the right candidates. When granted access to someone's network, it is firstly an honour, however it is imperative I approach this opportunity with the utmost respect, endeavouring to establish genuine connections grounded in trust and mutual understanding. In this context, trust is not freely given; it must be earned through transparent communication and honesty.

In the unique landscape of an emerging economy, this relationship-building effort takes on an added significance. It necessitates an acute understanding of the need for upskilling and continuous development. By championing the interests of my candidates and clients, while being conscious of the imperative for enhancing skills and capabilities, it has been my role to contribute significantly to the future success of the country in the decades to come.

Discovering the Impact of the Mentee/Mentor Relationship

If I have learnt anything it is the profound significance of family values, deeply ingrained in the PNG community, extends far beyond the confines of the home and permeates into the professional sphere. During my early experiences in recruitment in PNG, I was astounded by the substantial role a personal or professional mentor plays in the journey of a candidate seeking to transition roles with a job offer in hand.

I was taken aback by the substantial influence had by these mentors over the career choices of their mentees. Regardless of whether I personally agreed with their decisions, it was never (and has never been) my place as a recruiter, nor should it be, to interfere in this relationship. The impact a mentor has on their mentee is profound and should never be underestimated. This revelation was an eye-opener for me, one I hadn't fully grasped before entering the PNG job market.

I am now acutely aware of the depth of this mentor/mentee relationship, thanks to my experiences in PNG. I recognise and appreciate its significance in the professional world. The mentor-mentee dynamic is deeply ingrained in the culture, and I have immense respect for and understanding of this vital aspect of the employment process for anyone seeking new opportunities. PNG has taught me the importance of this relationship, and I am grateful for the insight it has provided.

Empowering Growth: Unveiling the Passion and Potential of Papua New Guinea's Workforce

The desire for progress and personal growth among the people of PNG is genuine and profoundly important. In my interactions with individuals and as I cultivate relationships, it becomes evident that there is a collective aspiration to contribute positively to their nation. I have rarely encountered such a passionate populace, deeply devoted to their country's advancement and their own role within it.

This passion is intertwined with a reserved nature and a keen drive for self-improvement. Many applicants strive for roles beyond their current capabilities, motivated by the desire to secure a better future for themselves, their families, and generations to come. Despite their reticence, PNG citizens are deeply rooted in their personal development, even if they hesitate to voice their ambitions openly.

In the intricate interplay between PNG's distinctive approach, my recruitment strategy with my clients, and the contributions of expatriate candidates, a harmonious synergy emerges. By embracing the diversity of talents, skills, and perspectives, a robust and flourishing workforce environment takes shape. Honesty, openness, and genuine respect are crucial in this process. Understanding the reserved nature of PNG citizens and recognising their unwavering commitment to self-improvement are vital aspects of navigating this unique professional landscape.

This synergy not only benefits the individuals involved but also holds significant promise for PNG's economic and societal development as a whole. Through a collective understanding and respectful integration of these elements, we can foster a professional landscape in PNG that competes on the global stage while remaining deeply rooted in its rich cultural fabric.

Conclusion: Fostering Synergy in Papua New Guinea’s Professional Landscape?

In navigating the intricate dynamics between PNG's unique approach, my strategies in my role, and the contributions of expatriate candidates, a harmonious synergy unfolds. This collaboration, embracing diverse talents, skills, and perspectives, cultivates a thriving and robust workforce environment. Through a nuanced understanding, profound respect, and strategic leveraging of these elements, we are shaping a professional landscape in PNG that stands as both globally competitive and culturally rich.

My immersion within the PNG network, characterised by my candid approach and sincere support for the local populace, has facilitated the challenging transition of recruitment in this intricate market and emerging economy. PNG, with its unique blend of challenges and opportunities, has not only provided avenues for my personal and professional growth but has also ignited my passion for the 'Land of the Unexpected.' I am profoundly grateful to PNG for granting me the opportunity to be a part of its remarkable journey.

My gratitude extends to the expatriate candidates who, like me, recognise the immense potential within PNG. I express my thanks to my clients for their trust in my ability to identify the ideal candidates. Most importantly, I am indebted to the PNG candidates, each with their unique narratives. Your stories resonate deeply with me, and I find immense fulfilment in being able to assist you in finding your perfect roles and watching your journey.

Looking ahead, I eagerly anticipate a lasting and meaningful partnership with the resilient people of PNG and my esteemed clients. Together, we are not only shaping careers but also contributing significantly to the growth and development of Papua New Guinea's economy and society as a whole.
