Reflecting on my Siemens Internship

Reflecting on my Siemens Internship

For the past three months, I had the privilege of working at Siemens as a Digitalization Intern. This experience has been incredibly rewarding, and I wanted to share some key takeaways and highlights from my time at this amazing company.

Technical Skills?

During my internship, I had the opportunity to delve?into the technologies and visualization/analytics tools used at Siemens. I learned how to manipulate large excel files into automated dashboards on tableau with the help of KNIME. I got familiar with some of Siemens’ data warehouses such as SAC and Snowflake and was able to gain valuable insights when visualizing data. Most importantly, I learned how to efficiently solve tedious problems and interact with stakeholders so that everyone had a positive experience.?

Achievements?

I worked on many projects throughout my limited time with Siemens. One of the biggest projects I worked on was the conversion of a massive tableau file that had not been updated in a few years. The creation of a new data source in Snowflake made the conversion much cleaner, but the project still took me a few weeks to complete. By the end of my internship, I completed the Balance Sheet, Cash Flow, Profit/Loss, and Headcount Dashboards for my business unit. With a little bit of time left, I was also able to complete the management summary board. Another project I worked on was a deep-dive analysis of the marketing department of motion control. My colleague and I were asked to create an automated dashboard that would show stakeholders marketing spendings on 4 different levels. Lastly, I worked on another project that allowed me to analyze the discounts given to certain products and services in a particular business unit. Using those discounts, my team & I created a KNIME workflow that would pull all of the data necessary from hundreds of files to create one singular excel file, which would then be uploaded into Tableau to create presentable dashboards to show Siemens’ management an analysis of the correlation between project discounts and profitability.?

Mentors and Connections

My mentors and manager here at Siemens have truly been invaluable. Some mentors I had throughout the entirety of my internship were Taiwo Akinmurele, Ryan Etzwiler, and Catherine Chen. Alongside their mentorship, we were able to accomplish so much within the span of a few months. I would also love to give a special shoutout to my manager, Jochen Zenk, for a fun-learning experience this Summer. He provided guidance, shared his experiences, and helped me navigate through the unique challenges of this role. Thank you everyone for your tremendous support as mentors and manager!?

I look forward to making more connections here at Siemens and exploring the opportunities this role can further offer me.?

Important Lessons

This internship has taught me the art of efficient problem-solving and the value of seeking help when needed. From my school experiences, I was so used to always problem-solving? by myself, it took me a while to realize that not every problem can be solved by me. I learned that it is okay not to excel at everything simultaneously; it's about making progress and setting achievable goals. If needed, I can always move my focus to some other goal and then return to the main path when I have more skills and experience with what I am trying to accomplish.

Looking at the Future

This experience has prepared me for future roles in several ways. I've honed my networking skills by facing people from different backgrounds daily, and developed a strong work ethic. One of the most amazing skills that I gained is staying connected with my teammates, even in a remote work environment. Setting and achieving goals is now second nature to me, and I am actively working to improve it throughout my career.

Memorable Moments

Some of the most memorable moments were during training, where I got to know my team members, hear about their unique journeys, and explore how different paths all led us to the same destination. Now that the training part is over, every day, I still cherish the moments when I can turn a frustrated stakeholder into a delighted one. I'm grateful for the chance to be part of the Siemens family, and I look forward to what the future holds for me!?
