Reflecting on my second year at Brighton University

In 2021 when I first moved to Brighton nothing truly prepared me for what my University journey would be like. Studying Music business and media in the amazing city has opened so many doors for me. From my placement at Codesouth radio to being elected the social sec of the Socialist Society, I can honestly say that the staff, the university and the people in this wonderful city have enhanced my life for the better.

All this being said, it's such a massive shame to have started my duties as social sec on such a negative note. For the last two years, our society has been working to improve the overall quality of education for our fellow students and to make sure that every member of our community is treated just and fairly. The actions taken by the university management to make over 100 staff redundant not only harms the standard of education but shows an overall lack of understanding as to what makes the student experience one worth living.

my last two years aren't owed to shiny new buildings and useless footbridges, but to the lecturers and staff who come in and perform above and beyond every day to make sure I get my degree and get the best start in my career. Despite the worsening conditions, I know I can always seek support from my personal tutor, my SSGT, or even my course leader because they are the people who truly make our university.

I'm proud of what we as a student body have achieved. with so many new support and solidarity groups popping up in the last few months and so many demonstrations taking place, it's been inspiring to see true solidarity among staff and students. I hope in the following year I can further utilise the invaluable knowledge I've gained as a music business and media student to motivate the student body to realise their true potential. These are our fees, our university and our student union. If it's not working for us then who is it working for?
