As I complete 60 days in the beautiful green city that has captured the hearts of millions, I find myself reflecting on my time in the divine and inspiring emirates of Dubai, where I spent 6 transformative years of my life and built the foundation of my career. Comparing these two remarkable cities might seem unfair, but as an observer of life's economic principles, I can't help but draw some parallels. Here’s a closer look at these cities, each teeming with expats like myself:
- Population: London 9.78 million vs Dubai 2.26 million. The median age of the population is 36.4 & 27 years
- GDP: London $565 billion Dubai $82.1 billion
- Unemployment rate: London 8.1% vs Dubai 0.4%
- Average Temperature: London 14.9 vs Dubai 29.5
- Cost of Living with rent: London is 34.4% higher than in Dubai
- Taxes: London Income Tax starts from 20% whereas Dubai is 0%
- Public Transport: London's public transportation network is far more extensive than Dubai's but also more expensive on average. London's tube network alone has about 270 stations not including the 100-plus overground, 45 Docklands Light Railway, and thousands of bus stops.
- Architecture: As my architect husband says, the Fabric of London is culturally rich. London's architectural heritage involves many architectural styles from different historical periods. Whereas Dubai is filled with modern and iconic structures.
- Human-Centric design: You step on the iconic red bus or you are climbing the stairs of a metro station, if you are mindful and observant, you realize that London is a place for anyone and everyone. The ecosystem has been designed to include people with disability and inclusion is the essence of the society. Dubai still has to make more efforts in this field.
- Quality of life: Life in London is pretty exciting if you like exploring the outdoors. The rich flora and fauna are a treat to the eyes and cycling, hiking and running are a favorite sport for Londoners. Dubai has defied all geographical limitations and has created an indoor ski, the world's biggest swimming pool, adventure parks, lakes, and camping sites for you to treat yourself after a week's hard work.
Life has taught me that our hearts have room for all the places and people we love, each relationship holding its own timeline. I will always cherish what Dubai has given me: the person I have become, the lessons I have learned, and most importantly, the people I have earned. I have always considered myself as a sum of people who have been my guide and mentor and have helped me come this far. I am thankful to a lot of people, but the gems include
Rachel D'monte
Lavanya Laxman
Samir Geepee (The Clarity Game?)
Rizwan Ansari
. Their guidance and advice are deeply etched in my mind, and even when I can’t reach out, our conversations continue to inspire me. I hope to give back to others at least half of what they have given me.
Dubai, you will always be missed. Here’s to hoping London is kind and that I encounter more wonderful souls in the journey ahead :)
