Reflecting on My Internship at The Municipal Market

My internship at The Municipal Market was a journey of growth, discovery, and connection. Immersing myself in a space that has served as a public cornerstone for decades, I quickly realized this role went beyond property operations. It was about understanding the heart of a historic public institution, its impact on the people it serves, and finding ways to continue its story and mission.

Here are the 3 important lessons that I learned during my time at City of Atlanta's The Municipal Market.

Serving the Public Good

During my time at the market, I gained invaluable insights into the importance of public spaces and the intricate process of raising public funds to further their mission. From gathering financial information to supporting funding proposals to navigating city council approvals, I witnessed the effort required to secure resources for public community-focused spaces. It was about creating an environment where small businesses could thrive and the community could feel a profound sense of belonging.

Recreating Space and Reviving History

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my internship was using storytelling to bring new life to a property. For the market’s 100-year celebration, we transformed a vacant tenant space into a museum showcasing its rich history. Visitors could explore the market’s story through photos and exhibits, including notable moments such as visits from Bill Clinton and John Lewis. The museum not only celebrated the market’s legacy but also created a space to honor its role in the community. This experience reinforced my passion for blending real estate, community-building, and storytelling, while highlighting the profound impact thoughtful and inclusive spaces can have on people’s lives.

Decision-Making in an Ever-Changing Environment

The internship also taught me the art of decision-making in a dynamic and ever-changing environment. From addressing tenant concerns and finding creative solutions on a limited resources to preparing events that attract visitors, I learned to approach challenges with adaptability and resilience. Public markets often operate without a clear blueprint; each day brings new opportunities and obstacles, requiring a commitment to the greater mission of serving the public’s health and well-being.

Closing Reflection

My time at The Municipal Market has been a defining experience in my career journey. It deepened my understanding of how historic properties can evolve while staying true to their mission, and it reaffirmed my dedication to creating spaces that serve communities in meaningful ways. I look forward to continuing this lessons into my next role at Disney where I aim to continue blending storytelling, community-building, and purposeful design to create lasting impact.

Great article. I was looking for the long section on the amazing leadership. Ray is still broken up the you first rejected him, then abandoned the market. He’s been wearing black ever since you left.
