?? Reflecting on an Inspiring Day in Lismore ??

Yesterday, I had the incredible honour of representing the Australia Day Council at the 2025 Australia Day ceremony in Lismore.
The day began with a deeply moving Welcome to Country delivered by Aunti Thelma James on behalf of the Bundjalung people. Her wise and insightful words reminded us of the enduring custodianship of these land ( #alwayswasalwayswillbe ) and inspiring us to continue our journey of reconciliation.
It was also a privilege to witness Jenny McAllister welcome 17 new Australian citizens. Australia’s diversity is our strength, and these new citizens bring with them vibrant cultures, talents, and perspectives that will enrich our community for generations to come.
Mayor Steve Krieg embodies what it means to be a leader who cares deeply for his community. His efforts in rebuilding Lismore after the catastrophic 2022 floods have been nothing short of extraordinary. The floods left an indelible mark on this region. Homes were destroyed, businesses were lost and lives were upended. In true Australian spirit and collaboration of all sectors of government (nice work Steve), Lismore is rebuilding and the community has come together with resilience, courage and the renowned Aussie spirit of mateship. I strongly encourage you to drop in, spend some money and soak up their history and some wonderful local produce.
Australia Day is a time to reflect on our shared history, celebrate our diversity and honour the incredible people who make our nation strong.
Congratulations to the winners and nominees of the 2025 Lismore Australia Day Awards. Inspiring to hear of your achievements and commitment to the region of Lismore
