Reflecting on Gratitude, An Unexpected Estate Planning Bonus

As we enter the season of gratitude, I find myself reflecting on the privilege of working with families navigating the challenging yet rewarding journey of estate planning. Gratitude is a theme that weaves itself into my practice, not only as a value but as an experience shared by my clients and myself.

Recently, a client came to our planning meeting with a familiar mix of emotions: overwhelm, uncertainty, and the weight of unresolved decisions. They had been trying to organize their thoughts and commit to creating a will for years, yet each time, the sheer scale of the task and the potential complexities held them back. They came to me knowing that an estate plan was essential but were unsure how to begin. I felt grateful for their trust and knew my role was to be the guide they needed to make this process less daunting.

During our planning meeting, we worked together to identify the key people in their lives and clarify their wishes, values, and concerns. We discussed their assets and how each one could help them create a legacy that truly reflected their life’s work and intentions. Together, we turned what had once been a swirl of thoughts into a clear, actionable plan.

By the end of our meeting, I could see a visible change. The client expressed sincere gratitude, sharing that they had shifted from feeling paralyzed by the process to feeling relieved and ready to move forward. They now had the confidence and structure to create an estate plan that brought peace to them and security for those they love.

Their gratitude reminded me of why I chose this path—to be a compassionate advocate during moments when people often feel most vulnerable. Estate planning is about more than legal documents; it's about helping people gain clarity and comfort in their decisions. Having an attorney by your side who understands your unique journey can make a tremendous difference.

As we approach the season of giving thanks, I encourage everyone to take a moment to recognize the people in their lives who support them through life’s challenges. Whether it’s through estate planning or everyday acts of kindness, gratitude transforms both the giver and the receiver.

Wishing everyone a reflective season of gratitude and peace. Thank you to my clients for the trust you place in me—your journeys continue to inspire and motivate me every day.

I love this article, Erin! A great reminder of the importance of our role as counselors, not simply "document preparers."
