Reflecting on the FlexCharging Journey: Growth, Challenges, and What’s Next

Building a startup in the EV space isn’t for the faint of heart. The industry moves fast, policies shift, and customer needs evolve. At FlexCharging, we tackled these challenges head-on—securing reference customers, launching new products, growing our team, and forming key partnerships. I’m proud to share that we successfully sold FlexCharging, marking the end of an incredible chapter. As I transition to new opportunities, I want to take a moment to reflect on what we built, what we learned, and what’s next.

At FlexCharging, I had the opportunity to lead as Chief Product Officer, shaping our vision for the future of EV charging intelligence. Some of my key contributions included:

  • Product Leadership: Owned and managed our Product Suite, developing a multi-year roadmap for EV Owners, Utilities, and Internal Administrative portals.
  • Sales & Growth: Restructured our utility customer sales process and created a new go-to-market approach, ensuring we achieved key adoption metrics.
  • Fundraising & Strategy: Led strategic fundraising efforts, helping to secure essential capital to propel the company forward.
  • Brand & Market Expansion: Spearheaded a full company brand realignment, leading to increased customer attraction and industry recognition.
  • Partnerships & Integration: Worked directly with utilities, EVSE, and strategic partners to integrate our platform seamlessly into their ecosystems.
  • Team Building & Leadership: Built a high-caliber team by bringing in trusted colleagues from my past work and leveraging my network to recruit key talent in product, design, and marketing.

Team Achievements & Milestones

None of this would have been possible without an incredible team. Together, we:

  • Launched new EV and utility-focused products, including a mobile-responsive web platform for EV owners.
  • Expanded our utility partnerships, integrating with key players in the energy space.
  • Enhanced our conference presence, strengthening our market position through case studies, compelling booth design,?and impactful presentations.
  • Became a finalist for the Free Electrons 2023 program, gaining recognition among top energy innovators worldwide.

Challenges & Lessons Learned

Startups in the EV and utility space require constant adaptation. A few lessons that stood out:

  1. EV Adoption is Growing, But Education is Key: Many customers still require guidance to understand the value of managed charging.
  2. Utility Sales are Complex: Navigating regulatory landscapes and procurement cycles is a long game, requiring persistence and strategic partnerships.
  3. Product-Market Fit is a Moving Target: As policies, incentives, and tech evolve, staying agile is the key to sustained growth.

Gratitude & Acknowledgment

I'm grateful to the entire FlexCharging team, our customers, and partners who believed in what we were building. It’s been a privilege to work alongside such talented individuals pushing the EV industry forward.

What’s Next

What excites me most as a leader is bringing together the essential pieces of a business—product, sales, marketing, operations, and strategy—to create a cohesive, high-performing organization. I thrive in environments where I can align teams, streamline execution, and drive growth by integrating the right people, processes, and strategies. As I explore my next opportunity, I’m looking for a role where I can apply this approach to scale a business, navigate complexity, and unlock new opportunities.

It’s really hard to get EV drivers to turn over their charging times to someone else. It’s a constraint that doesn’t exist for gasoline cars. Plus, not everyone wants to keep their car plugged in whenever it’s parked. Most have adjusted to charging their cars during the off-peak period.
