Reflecting on Change: Lessons from Winston's Retirement
2024 has been a year of significant milestones, but none as poignant as the retirement of my faithful Old English Sheepdog, Winston, from his illustrious career in pet therapy. At age 12, Winston, a true senior citizen in dog years, has gracefully transitioned from his working life to a well-deserved phase of relaxation and leisure.
Winston's career was marked by numerous achievements and heartwarming moments. Over the years, he provided comfort and laughter to countless individuals in Southeast England and Asheville, North Carolina -- from Peter Symonds College to Mission Health . ?His clownish nature and unwavering dedication made him a beloved figure wherever he went. But as with all great careers, there came a time when the demands became too great.
Throughout his career, Winston was rewarded with carrots for his hard work. These treats symbolized his accomplishments and the gratitude of those he helped. However, as he grew older, the number of carrots needed to motivate him increased. The once cherished reward became a source of stress rather than satisfaction.
This change in Winston's behaviour has prompted me to reflect on our own professional journeys. How often do we find ourselves chasing the proverbial carrot, only to realize that it no longer brings us the same joy and fulfilment? It raises several questions as we begin a New Year:
·??????? Are we still motivated by the same rewards that once drove us?

·??????? How do we recognize when it's time to re-evaluate our goals and aspirations?
·??????? What are the signs that our current path may no longer serve our well-being and happiness?
Winston's story serves as a powerful reminder that it is essential to assess what truly motivates us. When the carrot loses its appeal, it may be time to explore new avenues, set fresh goals, and find alternative sources of inspiration. After all, our professional satisfaction should not be solely tied to external rewards, but also to our inner sense of purpose and contentment.
As we begin a New Year, let us take a moment to reflect on our motivations and ensure they align with our true aspirations. Just as Winston has found peace in his retirement, may we too find fulfilment in our professional and personal lives.
Happy New Year and peace to all.
