Reflecting on 2024: Key Themes from Higher Education and Online Learning Conferences

As the year comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the conferences I attended this year on behalf of Learning Sandbox : OLC Innovate, OLC Accelerate, UPCEA SOLA+R/DT&L, UPCEA Convergence, and ASU GSV (along with numerous virtual events). These gatherings provided a lens into the future of higher education, online learning, and professional and continuing education. Several key themes stood out, offering both challenges and opportunities for our industry.
1. Embracing Digital Transformation
Integrating digital technologies into education was a central theme across all conferences. Institutions are not just adopting technology; they’re embedding it into their core strategies to enhance both learning experiences and operational efficiency. At UPCEA SOLA+R and DT&L, sessions emphasized how data analytics, adaptive learning tools, and artificial intelligence (more on that in a minute) are shaping the next generation of educational experiences. The conversation extended beyond technology itself, touching on institutional readiness, faculty training, and the need to align digital tools with broader organizational goals.
2. Prioritizing Equity and Inclusion
Equity and inclusion continue to take center stage, with institutions striving to ensure educational opportunities are accessible to all learners. At OLC Innovate, the theme “Elevating Pathways: Navigating the Terrain of Future Learning” highlighted the importance of designing inclusive online learning environments that meet the needs of diverse learners. Presentations addressed practical strategies, such as using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, expanding broadband access, and building culturally responsive content. The overarching message was clear: equity isn’t just an ethical imperative—it’s a strategic one that will determine the long-term success of educational institutions.
3. Leveraging Artificial Intelligence in Education
The rapid advancement of AI technologies dominated many discussions, but the tone this year was notably different. In 2023, conversations about AI were often defensive, focusing on mitigating risks like academic dishonesty or the potential displacement of faculty roles. In 2024, the narrative shifted toward opportunity. At OLC Accelerate, keynote speaker Dr. C. Edward Watson and others showcased how generative AI tools can drive innovation in learning design, from automating feedback on assignments to creating personalized learning experiences. Practical applications were emphasized, such as using AI to predict student success and identify interventions. The consensus? AI is here to stay, and educators must adapt to harness its transformative power.

4. Fostering Collaboration and Community
Collaboration was a recurring theme, not just as a means of sharing knowledge but as a driver of innovation. OLC Accelerate celebrated 30 years of fostering a community dedicated to advancing online learning. I was honored to present alongside my colleagues Ruth Steyn and Nina Holderness-Parker as we discussed the value of cross-institutional partnerships and the collective power of educators, technologists, and administrators working together. At UPCEA Convergence, networking sessions underscored the importance of community-building among those driving change in professional, continuing, and online education.
5. Strengthening Leadership in Online Education
Leadership in the rapidly evolving landscape of online education remains pivotal. The UPCEA SOLA+R conference focused on the need for leaders to inspire and guide institutions through change. Keynotes and sessions explored the traits of effective leadership—vision, adaptability, and a commitment to lifelong learning—and how these traits are essential for navigating challenges such as declining enrollments, the shifting needs of adult learners, and increased competition in the online space. Leaders were encouraged to champion innovation while staying grounded in providing high-quality, learner-centered education.
Looking Ahead to 2025
This year’s conferences highlighted the dynamic interplay of technology, equity, leadership, and collaboration shaping the future of education. These themes collectively point toward a future where learning is more inclusive, innovative, and responsive to the needs of all learners. As we move into 2025, I look forward to seeing how these ideas evolve and continue to shape the educational landscape.
I enjoyed meeting many of you at these events, making new connections, and sharing laughs with former colleagues -- who all remind me regularly that your network is everything.
What themes resonated most with you this year? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
