Reflect. Empower. Unite: My journey as a 2SLGBTQ+ Leader in Fintech

This year's NYC's Pride theme, Reflect. Empower. Unite, deeply resonates with me. It's a call to action that perfectly captures the journey of many 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, including myself.??

Looking back at my journey of self-discovery, it was anything but conventional. It began as I joined the University of Toronto, but my career took unexpected turns – from being poached by a tier-2 banking organization in the first year of my university to a consultancy firm – before landing me right here at TD.??

Reflecting on a different path?

My time working in Asia was pivotal as it proved to be transformative. It was during that time when I made the courageous decision to come out. Yet, navigating the delicate balance of being a visible 2SLGBTQ+ leader while being mindful of the legal constraints of being queer in that society presented its own set of challenges.?

Moving back to Canada and joining TD was a conscious decision. I contemplated deeply what kind of leader I wanted to be and where I would be accepted and respected for who I am. From the moment I entered those doors, I felt embraced by the culture of care. It was as if TD rolled out the rainbow carpet for me: from being asked to speak at multiple forums right after joining to receiving tremendous support from my peers, it was a humbling experience.??

Fast forward to the present – being recognized on the global Outstanding LGBTQ+ Role Model Lists in 2022 and 2023, was not just a professional achievement but a testament to the inclusive environment fostered by TD. In my role as a tech leader, I'm entrusted with significant responsibilities, from spearheading the Agile implementation of innovative capabilities to supporting customer shopping engagement journeys across the enterprise.??

Empowering through authenticity?

There is no denying that being one of the few South Asian, bisexual millennial women leaders in my field can be isolating. The pressure to be a visible advocate for my community is immense. But the pressure comes with a unique opportunity to empower others. I vividly recall speaking at an event about my journey, only to have a woman approach me afterward, expressing gratitude. She confided in me that it was leaders like me, sharing openly about experiences with authenticity that gave her the strength to come out to their loved ones. This is the true power of visible representation.??

In my capacity as the Chair of TD's 2SLGBTQ+ Women's Committee and a member of TD’s 2SLGBTQ+ Executive Steering Committee, I am committed to driving positive change and advocating for inclusivity within the Bank and beyond. Through various initiatives supporting our 2SLGBTQ+ Women at TD including a dedicated Teams chat for connection to mentorship and professional development programs, we're striving to foster a safe and inclusive environment for everyone.??

Uniting for a brighter future?

The landscape is changing. There are more 2SLGBTQ+ conferences and spaces than ever before. But alongside visibility comes the responsibility of being a good ally.??

What does it truly mean to be an ally? It's about showing up and bringing in a friend, educating yourself and applying your knowledge. It's about actively supporting the 2SLGBTQ+ community through advocacy, mentorship, sponsorship, not just during Pride month.??

I envision a future where 2SLGBTQ+ leaders are not just the expectation but the norm, where everyone feels safe and supported to be their authentic selves.??

To young individuals embarking on their careers, I offer this advice: choose organizations that demonstrate genuine commitment to inclusivity and equity beyond performative gestures. Look for companies that prioritize diversity and actively support 2SLGBTQ+ employees year-round. Seek out allies and mentors within the community and advocate for yourselves and others.?
