Refining the Ground Control Strategy

Major strategy pivot! Pruning publishing platforms, curating learning inputs, showcasing LinkedIn gems, and amping up video - let's refine and realign.

Read on my website

Read time: 3 minutes

It's time for an honest assessment and some pruning of my publishing strategy for Ground Control.

?As I've mentioned, I want to stay candid about my goals and what's working or not.

“Today’s” post was written to be published Friday.?

This bit here was added at 10 pm last night from 30,000 feet.?

Barreling down to Atlanta.?

It’s safe to say I’m busy.?

And with that busyness comes compromise.?

Did I want to push my publish date? Not at all.?

Was it necessary? I guess so.?

But….I’m not going to let a disruption throw me off.?

I do see the humor and providence in publishing about editing and pruning as I’m overwhelmed and thrown from the saddle.?

Ride on.

Good Morning! And Thanks for reading!

Let’s get to it - here are the key changes I'm making:

The Weekly Editions

After 17 weeks publishing to multiple platforms, I've realized a lot of that effort was superfluous. I'm cutting Ground Control's syndication on Medium and Typeshare - those weren't providing unique value.

I'm also ditching unnecessary graphics that were slowing me down or potentially hurting engagement, like images in email newsletters.??

With these changes, I go from 5 publishing platforms down to 3, and reduce design work by 60%.

Curating My Learning Inputs

The other big area I'm editing is the learning side of my daily/weekly process. While I've advocated for subscribing to newsletters to hyper-educate yourself, I've reached a point of overwhelm.

Not just from subscribing to too much content, but also from having absorbed many of the initial lessons that led me to subscribe in the first place.?

Part of the learning process is recognizing when you've extracted the value and need to pivot to implementing those lessons.

That's where I'm at now, so out come the pruning shears!?

I'll be unsubscribing from at least 80% of the content I currently receive. This will significantly lighten my inbox load and give me space to identify new areas for focused learning down the road.

Highlighting My LinkedIn Writing??

Every day, I write and engage on LinkedIn, testing out ideas that eventually make it into these newsletters.?

Going forward, I'll include a section highlighting my favorite LinkedIn posts/videos from the previous week.

This will allow me to share more content without having to write a novel each time. I have some exciting new projects starting to take shape that I want to keep you updated on.

Video: The Next Frontier

Speaking of new fronts - I've been creating more video content lately. As you know, I'm a passionate communicator, and being on camera lets me convey ideas in a more dynamic, conversational way.??

So get ready, because I'll be expanding into more video updates and segments. My positive vibes and fabulous baritone are coming for you!

That covers the big shifts for now. I'm excited about these refinements and will keep you posted on how they impact things moving forward.

Until next week.?

This is Ground Control.

Patrick Rife happens, brother. ... even to the best of us. Like yourself ?? I know plenty of email gurus that preach emailing every day... and then never do. You're at least honest about it... and that what matter most. Because, most won't do that.

Loving the strategy shake-up, Patrick! It’s a solid reminder to cut the clutter and focus on what really moves the needle. Thanks for laying it out, man—it’s got me thinking about how I can streamline my own stuff.
