Reefers (refrigerated containers) are a type of intermodal container equipped with a refrigeration unit to transport temperature-sensitive cargo such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products, chocolate, wine, pharmaceutical products and chemical products.

Although reefer containers come with an internal refrigeration unit, they run on an external power source, whether it is a power point on a ship or a power point at a terminal. When they are connected to the trucks that transport them, they are powered by diesel generators on these trailers, called "gen sets".

Types of Reefer Containers

According to Features

The main purpose of a refrigerated container is to keep the goods at a constant temperature between -25oC and + 25oC, avoiding peaks that could damage the product. While this is sufficient for most products, other products require lower temperatures or other conditions, which may require the use of more specific types of refrigerated containers, so we can find.

Super Freezers: These are refrigerated containers equipped with more powerful refrigeration units and more efficient insulation, which means that goods can be kept at temperatures up to -60oC. Controlled atmosphere: These reefers can maintain a specific atmospheric pressure. This is useful, for example, to control the ripening process of fruits transported in reefers. Some of these containers can also provide high humidity conditions.

Ventilated containers: These shipping containers are equipped with insulation and refrigeration units that provide good ventilation. They are the perfect solution for products such as onions, potatoes, garlic and coffee.
