Reef Report: August Edition

MUST-READ ARTICLES ON OCEAN NEWS

We have curated a selection of articles from the past month that highlight discoveries of our ocean and more scientific reasoning to ramp up global climate action to protect our blue planet and its coral reefs.

Scientists discovered a link to life’s origins in the deep sea

In a pretty incredible discovery, whilst exploring the deep sea, scientists may now have more insights into life’s beginnings as they’ve found a whole underwater world, called the ¨Lost City¨, hosting an abundance of ocean-dwelling creatures. Discover more here .

Hope for coral reefs found in Honduras

Despite being exposed to decades of pollution and heat waves on the northern coast of Honduras, Tela Bay is abundantly alive with coral. Scientists are beginning to tease out different theories on its resilience, ranging from the presence of sea urchins to heat-resistant symbionts. Find out more here .

A closer look into the unique corals of Bonaire

The corals of Bonaire in the south Caribbean have demonstrated a unique resilience to climate change and the ability to bounce back from major die-offs. A potential reason for Bonaire’s abundance could be due to local marine protections amidst the warming climate. Read further here .

Scripps Institution is building a long-term dataset on coral bleaching

From California’s coast, marine biologists at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography are conducting a long-term study of coral reef bleaching to help inform approaches to coral reef conservation and restoration. Read more here .?

To save corals, scientists consider banking and freezing them

Much like human biology and oocyte cryopreservation, scientists are looking to bank living corals in aquariums and stock their eggs and sperm in cryostorage for future I.V.F. to buy time while we wait for the world to slow, and hopefully, one day reverse climate change. Find out more here .
