Redundancy: the good, the bad and the ugly.

For most the word redundancy is associated as being negative but it needn’t be. Whilst it can be an emotional roller-coaster depending on your circumstances and can throw a few spanners in the works, there can be many opportunities to come from being made redundant. Trying to stay positive in such circumstances can be extremely difficult, but there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
Recently I have assisted a number of candidates who are going through a redundancy process and have tried to remain positive and have a “glass half full” approach (which I know is much easier sat on the other side of the fence!). As one door closes, another one opens and it’s key to remember the following:
It’s an opportunity for change – change can be daunting and ultimately will push you out of your comfort zone but use it to help kick start the next step in your career.
It can be an opportunity to enhance your skill set – if your employer is helping to support you with your new search or is willing to help develop your skills through courses then make the most of it. If you’ve always wanted to learn VLOOKUP’s and pivot tables for example then take the time to do so. On the flip side, a redundancy package may give you the opportunity to take a short break from work and allow you to prioritise your time slightly differently which again can be used to learn something new or develop certain skills.
It’s ok to prioritise your own needs – if you find the perfect role and want to take time out of work to interview then do it. If you find the perfect role and need to finish earlier than your anticipated end date then have the conversation with your manager and think about yourself. I admire people for their dedication to their employer and their team when being made redundant but it is ok to prioritise your own needs; you don’t have to stay until the ship goes down.
Ultimately, surround yourself with people who will lift you up and support you with your onward journey from your employer. Support your colleagues and be there for them too, and remember to remain positive!
