Reducing food waste, change for good and (it's official) we love animals
In this September edition of the BehaviourWorks Australia Broadcast we explain how to reduce food waste, the challenges facing those caring for abandoned children (and how they can build their skills), and we answer those critical of the ‘dark side’ behavioural science.? We’re also making waves with the Circular Economy Roadmap, looking at how regulators can use incentives and explaining those daydreams of moving to a holiday destination forever.
Pocket Change: Reducing food waste
September 29 is the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, so to catch you up on what you can do at home (that’s where a lot of our food is wasted), this month’s episode of Pocket Change features our expert on reducing food waste, Dr Mark Boulet.? He has three key behaviours to share; buy what you need, use what you have and don’t make more than you’ll eat.?
Taking care of the carers
The Mirabel Foundation helps children who have been orphaned or abandoned due to parental illicit drug use.? We ran a scenario-based simulation training workshop to build skills in quick thinking, emotional intelligence, and the ability to stay calm under the pressure their job requires. How would you cope with the different scenarios they deal with every day?
A quiet word about behavioural science
Prompted by a recent article asking if behavioural experts were responsible for the darkest manipulations of the robodebt case, we wrote a response.? While we agree with some of the concerns raised in the article, we also lay out the clear ethical guidelines for those working in behavioural science and compelling cases where nudges have helped without harming.?

The 2023 Australian Animal Welfare Survey
We didn’t survey Australian animals. We surveyed Australians about their beliefs and behaviours about animal welfare to provide insights for policy and advocacy. Most Australians support animal welfare and the groups that advocate for them, like the Australian Alliance for Animals, but when it comes to advocacy, lack the time and knowledge of what to do.? Research like this may change those barriers.
