Will the Redmi Note 4 save Xiaomi?
Whether you're looking for your first smartphone or you’re a long time Android smartphone user, things have never been better. The intense competition in the market means that at literally very price point today, there are great phones to choose from. Not only do you have a huge range of choice in features and designs, you also get to choose from amongst phones that are priced exceedingly competitively against each other, as phone makers vie for a slice of the market. No country’s smartphone companies embody this do-or-die philosophy better than China’s.
Today, there are a number of popular Chinese upstart smartphone brands, many of which did not even exist as little as three years ago. Companies like Huawei, Oppo, OnePlus, Gionee and of course, Xiaomi. Xiaomi is possibly the most well-known of the Chinese smartphone brands today, since Hugo Barra, a high-up exec at Google, quit his job and moved to China to be Xiaomi’s CEO. The company has been hailed as the Chinese equivalent of Apple. Even the recent bad news has failed to put a stopper on how much of a success the brand is in countries like India.
The Note 4. Another best-seller?
Though Xiaomi has fallen out of the top five in terms of market share in its home country of China and has seen a huge sales slump along with news of the departure of its CEO Hugo Barra, it couldn't be having a better year in India. The company has started 2017 on a high note by introducing its budget phablet smartphone from its low-end Redmi sub-brand. The Redmi Note 4 has only gone on sale online in India last week and the phone has already set sales records that have eclipsed all previous sales figures for Xiaomi. When online reality giant Flipkart recently announced availability of the Note 4 to buy online in a flash sale, the response was amazing. In a period of just ten minutes, the seller managed to move over 2,50,000 Redmi Note 4’s plus additional numbers of accessories like Redmi Note 4 cases, covers and more.
Even this number is limited by the fact that this was probably the entire stock of phones that the seller had available for sale. Even third party accessory makers who made designer covers for the Note 4, saw huge sales of cases for the phone and incredible interest from customers trying to create a custom Redmi Note 4 case for their new purchase. This sales success has only raised the profile of Xiaomi even higher in India and made it more of a household brand name.
