As a woman leader in midlife, I know firsthand the importance of rediscovering one's purpose. After decades in the nonprofit world, I started my own business in my late 60s. This transition required me to reevaluate my priorities and redefine what brought meaning to my life. Purpose is a fundamental human need, and while its sources vary among individuals, finding personal meaning in work is crucial for engagement and satisfaction. Introspection is essential for women leaders to navigate the challenges and opportunities that come with personal and professional growth.
To rediscover your purpose, start by evaluating your priorities. Ask yourself, "What brings me joy and fulfillment?" and "What impact do I want to have on the world?" For example, a renowned leader, Oprah Winfrey, once said,
"The key to realizing a dream is to focus not on success but on significance, and then even the small steps and little victories along your path will take on greater meaning."
Next, craft a purpose statement that captures the essence of your values and aspirations. This statement reminds you of your core motivations and the impact you wish to have. For instance, "My purpose is to empower women leaders to achieve their full potential and create positive change in their organizations and communities."
Integrating your personal and professional selves is also essential. Seek opportunities to align your values and passions with your work. Sheryl Sandberg, former COO of Facebook (now Meta) and current board member, advised,
"Bring your whole self to work. I don't believe we have a professional self Monday through Friday and a real self the rest of the time."
Daily self-reflection is key to staying connected to your purpose. Set aside time daily to check in with yourself and ensure your actions align with your goals. This practice can help you make the necessary adjustments as your priorities evolve.
Remember, rediscovering your purpose is a continuous journey, not a destination. Rosalind Brewer, a trailblazing businesswoman who has served as the CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance, group president and COO of Starbucks, and CEO of Sam's Club, states,
