"Rediscovering Roots: The Beauty of Simple, Connected Living in Punjab"

In a world where we often rush through our days, it’s essential to slow down and reconnect with our roots. Reflecting on what life truly means brings a deeper understanding and a sense of peace. Despite numerous opportunities to settle abroad and live a lavish life, my heart has always remained connected to my origins.

I spent much of my time with my father, who hailed from Sargodha in Pakistan. His stories of the life they led there are now my treasured memories. He spoke of friendships that transcended religious boundaries, where Hindus and Muslims shared a pure, unadulterated bond. My grandmother would light the chula, a stove made of cow dung, to cook tandoori rotis. Nearby women would gather, bringing their kneaded flour, and together they prepared bread or chapati for their homes. It was during these times that they shared stories, laughed, gossiped, and found their moments of “me time.” No one judged one another, and the sense of community kept them strong. In times of need, everyone pitched in to help, and weddings were village-wide celebrations.

My father wrote and studied in Urdu, and his love for poetry has passed on to me. He would correct my poems, nurturing my passion for writing. Even today, when I visit the villages of interior Punjab, I am touched by the warmth and hospitality of the people. Guests are always welcomed warmly, often with tea or lunch. In contrast, city life feels isolating. We barely know our neighbors, let alone interact with them. In cities, I often feel lost and yearn for quiet corners where I can simply be myself.

I dream of a simple life where relationships are respected and bonds are strong. Though much of this is forgotten in the hustle and bustle of modern life, I cherish the cultural heritage and sense of belonging that I feel when I visit Punjab. Does anyone else resonate with these feelings?

When we remember and cherish our roots, we find a deeper connection to ourselves and to the world around us. Let's take a moment to reflect on the simplicity and beauty of life as it once was, and perhaps, as it still can be.
